In past decades, alternative female artists often struggled to find a place for themselves in the music industry, but that changed during the 2010s. They suddenly started dominating the charts, and delivering one hit after another, while carefully walking the line between many different genres.

Here are 5 albums that contributed to this change:

Florence and the Machine – Ceremonials

Florence’s debut album Lungs put this indie-pop group on the map, but its follow-up proved they’re not a one-hit-wonder and things only got better from there.

Lana Del Rey – Born to Die

Lana Del Rey is one of the alternative pop artist who defined the 2010s as we know it, and it all started with her major-label debut Born to Die.

St. Vincent – St. Vincent

St. Vincent is only one of two solo female artist to ever win a Grammy for best alternative music album, and her eponymous record from 2014 made this possible.

Billie Eilish – When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Billie Eilish’s star is still on the rise, but if her debut album is any indication of what awaits in the future, she’s got many amazing things in store for us.

Halsey – Badlands

Halsey shifted to pop as her career progressed, but she always identified as an alternative artist, and her debut album from 2015 clearly falls under this genre.

St. Vincent is currently on tour across the United States in support of MassEducation, a collection of acoustic, piano-driven versions of the songs from her 2017’s album Masseduction. As part of the tour, the 36-year-old singer/songwriter made a stop in New York where she delivered an exceptional performance at Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Besides performing songs from MassEducation and some of her other classics, St. Vincent also delivered an amazing cover of Lou Reed’s song “Perfect Day” with the help of pianist Thomas Bartlett. In case you didn’t manage to attend the show, don’t worry. One fan was kind enough to capture this performance on camera and share it with us who were not there.

Check out the video below.

Lou Reed wrote “Perfect Day” in 1972 after he and his then-fiancée Bettye Kronstad spent a day in New York’s Central Park. The song became a part of Reed’s second solo album Transformer and included contributions from Mick Ronson and David Bowie. It became a big hit and was covered by various music acts since then including British pop-rockers Duran Duran and Scottish recording artist Susan Boyle. Reed himself also re-recorded the song in 2003 for his nineteenth studio album The Raven.

American alternative rocker St. Vincent recently made an appearance on BBC Radio 6 Music and decided to play some of the guitar riffs that changed her life.

After picking up an acoustic guitar, she couldn’t remember which riff she learned first out of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung,” so she played them both. St. Vincent was then asked about some of the underappreciated riffs people should learn, opting to play The Breeders’ “Cannonball.”

For the part about riffs that make her want to pick up a guitar, she went with the classics: Jimi Hendrix’ “Manic Depression” and Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog.” Finally, St. Vincent also revealed she was a metalhead, since she played Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell” when it came to riffs she wishes she has written.

You can hear her playing all of these riffs and more in the video below.

When she is not sharing the riffs that changed her life, St. Vincent is playing her own stuff on her ongoing tour in support of her latest album Masseduction. Released in 2017, the album debuted at number 10 on the US Billboard 200, being her first top ten entry in the U.S. The album also met with critical acclaim, being considered one of the best records of 2017.

St. Vincent is one of the most intriguing music artists of today, and each of her live shows is something special. It wasn’t anything different on Tuesday when she took the stage at the INmusic festival.

Slowly navigating the audience through her biggest hits, St. Vincent looked comfortable on stage rocking her guitar. Everyone looked like they enjoyed every bit of the show, from St. Vincent – who was surprisingly joking around – to fans – who got drawn into the world of St. Vincent’s songs.

Still, there wasn’t much opportunity to catch a break after St. Vincent wrapped up the show with an acoustic version of “Prince Johnny.” While her performance was more than enjoyable, the highlight of the night was iconic Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds.

It was everything you would expect and then some more, at least for Cave’s fans. They know how to embrace the good and bad sides of his music.

The main selling point of this live show was the emotion he managed to translate to the audience. His movement on the stage, the change of mood in his voice and energy that’s bursting out of him during the show is a special thing to witness.

The audience was almost hypnotized by the “king of melancholy,” who was set to touch them as much as possible with his songs about birth, love, death and everything in between.

When we thought the show is over after a 10-minute long rendition of “Stanger Lee,” Cave decided to continue playing, which is a great rarity at music festivals. He topped already great show with songs “Push the Sky Away” and “Rings of Saturn,” and then finally sailed into the night, leaving the audience in awe.

Organizers of the FYF Fest, which was supposed to take place on July 21st and 22nd in Los Angeles, have announced on Tuesday that the festival has been canceled. The 2018 edition was set to celebrate festival’s 15th anniversary and had Janet Jackson and Florence + the Machine as the headliners.

“After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel FYF Fest 2018,” said the organizers on FYF Fest’s official website and social media. “Our team of many women and men have worked tirelessly on this event for many years but felt unable to present an experience on par with the expectations of our loyal fans and the Los Angeles music community this year. We will be announcing some special local shows soon, featuring some of the amazing artists from the 2018 line up.”

Other names that were booked for the FYF Fest 2018 include The XX, My Bloody Valentine, St. Vincent, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Future, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Car Seat Headrest, and Skepta.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BicihwHF_Wk/?utm_source=ig_embed

Although the organizers failed to offer a full disclosure on the reasons for the cancellation, Billboard reported that FYF Fest struggled with low ticket sales.

FYF Fest was established as an annual three-day music festival by music promoter Sean Carlson. The festival showcased a variety of music genres through four stages set in Los Angeles Exposition Park. Following the 2017 edition of the festival, Carlson decided to step away and hand the organization to Goldenvoice’s Jennifer Yacoubian.

One of Europe’s biggest music festivals, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, is getting even bigger this year. The festival has just announced the final round of 72 music acts for its 2018 edition, which added to more than 100 previously confirmed acts.

The newest additions include British pop sensation Dua Lipa, Australian legend Nick Cave with his band The Bad Seeds, alongside Interpol, and Massive Attack. Previously announced acts for this year’s festival include Eminem, Gorillaz, Nine Inch Nails, St Vincent, and David Byrne.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to present a line-up that offers iconic additions such as Nick Cave and Massive Attack as well as popstar Dua Lipa,” said Roskilde Festival’s Head of Program Anders Wahrén in a statement. “Together with an arts program that includes genre-defying highlights from Chelsea Manning to a giant anti-capitalist serpent and a highly unfair football pitch, there is so much to explore at Roskilde Festival 2018. It is exactly this sort of diversity, activism, and curiosity we are looking for when putting together the program.”

You can check out the full lineup for Roskilde Festival 2018 below.

Created in 1971, Roskilde Festival takes place annually in Roskilde, Denmark. This year’s edition of the festival will take place from June 30 to July 7, with more than 130,000 festival-goers expected.
