]]>The documentary ventures behind the scenes of the making of Young’s recent album, Colorado. The record saw Young reunite with Crazyhorse to create their first studio album in seven years. Recently, Young released the single “Rainbow of Colors” from the album. He wrote on his website: “‘Rainbow of Colors’ is a song about the USA and the whole world. The idea of this song is that we all belong together. Separating us into races and colors is an old idea whose time has passed.”
The making of the documentary has been part of one of the fifteen film projects Young has been working on in 2019. As a result of these projects, the rock icon postponed the remaining dates of his 2019 tour.
We don’t know much about “Mountaintop” other than that it revolves around Colorado. The record is due to be released later this month and the documentary has been created to enhance the record.
You can watch the trailer here:
Mountaintop hits theaters on October 22 and the album Colorado will follow three days later via Reprise.

]]>Alongside other hits, the audience was treated to a rare performance. Young played “New Mama” – a track taken from Tonight’s The Night album. He played the song for the first time in 42 years.
New Mama was featured in Young’s shows throughout his 1973 tour “time fades away” and “tonight’s the Night”. Since then he has played it only twice more: in a show in 1975 and in a benefit in 1977.
Young played a 14-song acoustic set that included classics like Old Man, new songs like Eternity, and a Buffalo Springfield song. Towards the end, he treated the crowd with New Mama. The show benefited the Bridge School and the Painted Turtle summer camp, non profit organizations that provide support to children with severe medical conditions and physical impediments.
In October 25, Young’s new album with his group Crazy Horse is due to be released. The album, Colorado, contains songs like “Milky Way” and “Rainbow of Colors.”

]]>Just this week, he posted on neilyoungarchives.com regarding his upcoming new record: “The first track from COLORADO, our next Crazy Horse album, is coming out this month. Billy, Ralphie, Nils and I are all very happy to bring this song “Rainbow of Colors” to you in all its ragged glory, as my original producer and life-long friend, the late David Briggs once said. 113 new songs ranging from around 3 minutes to over 13 minutes, will be coming your way. We hope you love this new album as much as we do.”
Young continued to comment on the docu-film that will accompany the album: “I have been continuing our work on Mountaintop Sessions, the documentary film about the making of COLORADO. It is a wild one folks, no holds barred. You will see the whole process just as it went down! Worts and all! I don’t think a film about this subject with the openness and intensity we have captured has ever been seen.”
“You can be the judge of that,” he continued, “because Shakey Pictures’ Mountaintop Sessions masterfully shot by cinematographer C.K. Vollick, will be released in over 100 theaters world-wide the week our album COLORADO debuts, in October.”

]]>Dylan and Young did a co-headlining show at London’s Hyde Park last week but did not perform together.
Young posted a snippet of their joint performance on his Instagram profile, while several fan-made clips surfaced since then. Check them below.
Bob Dylan extensively played “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” early in his career, and recorded a studio version with the Band during the Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. Dylan hasn’t played the song since his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976.
Neil Young, on the other hand, first did the song in 1975 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco with Dylan. Since then, Young performed the song four times with Willie Nelson. The last time Young and Nelson did the song was in September 2018 during a show in Saratoga Springs.

]]>It was Elliot Roberts who oversaw the careers of the likes of Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty, Talking Heads and Neil Young.
Last Friday, the music manager was found dead at the age of 76. The late legend has been working with Neil Young since 1969, and so it is no wonder that the singer-songwriter has paid tribute to Roberts on his official website.
In a heartfelt essay, Young wrote: “Never one to think of himself, he puts everyone else first. That’s what he did for me for over fifty years of friendship, love and laughter, managing my life, protecting our art in the business of music. That’s what he did.
“When it came to our business, Elliot guided me through every move. We talked every day. Often I would call him multiple times in a day, arguing, discussing, planning and sharing. He was there for me and protected my music with a fierceness.”
He continued: “No matter where I was in the world, no matter his other obligations, he was always by the side of the stage as much as he could be.”

Re-releasing old material is a popular trope for old-time rock stars. Young, however, has reassured his fans that he is not interested in releasing all his old material as some of it “is just not good enough.”
Young explained on his official website: “We don’t like to release a lot of songs on many albums, so ‘On The Way Home’ went by the wayside. ‘The Loner’ was just not good enough. I still make those decisions because I am here on the planet. However, those two versions will be available in the archives for members to hear. I have no plans to release everything I have ever recorded. Some of it is just not good enough.”

The reissue will be titled Ragged Glory II and will be available as a vinyl and CD, as well as digital release. The release date is still to be determined, but the album will be out at some point in 2019.
“Listening to these tracks is a real head-scratcher,” said the post. “They are equal to anything on the existing record, maybe better. Possibly, the thought at the time was to have a single album and not include the songs from the last half of the unique ‘set-oriented’ recording sessions.”
Ragged Glory was originally released on September 9, 1990, and ended up becoming an instant classic. While it didn’t have a particularly great run on the charts, peaking at number 31 on Billboard U.S. 200, the album received critical acclaim. Some of Young’s classics which are featured on the record include “Mother Earth (Natural Anthem),” “White Line” and “Mansion on the Hill.”

“Life is an unfolding saga,” Young detailed the reunion on his website. “A few months ago we started talking about playing some remote clubs and getting our feet wet again. Come and see us if you can as we approach our 50th year as a band. I think it will be the beginning of another beautiful chapter in our long, enriching and life changing Crazy Horse story.”
Neil Young and Crazy Horse started their collaboration in 1969 with the album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and went on to collaborate on 22 more albums. After taking a lengthy break from studio releases since 2004’s Greendale, Neil Young and Crazy Horse released two studio albums in 2012, Americana and Psychedelic Pill. These two albums remain their latest collaboration releases.
