]]>Newsted denied the rumors via an Instagram post made by his wife Nicole. “Jason is not joining Megadeth. Peace to them. Listen to metal,” Newsted wrote before explaining that her husband “does not have social media accounts.”
The news will most likely be a great disappointment for thrash metal fans, who were already excited about things that a Newsted-Mustaine team-up would offer. The possibilities were already hinted at back in 2013, when Newsted joined Megadeth on stage for a rendition of “Phantom Lord.”
Jason Newsted became Metallica’s bassist in 1986, replacing the late Cliff Burton. He recorded albums …And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, and Reload with the band before deciding to quit in 2001. Newsted wanted for the band to take a year-long hiatus at the time, so he could focus on his side projects, but his proposal was rejected. He would later work with bands Echobrain and Voivod while also touring with Ozzy Osbourne.
Dave Mustaine was Metallica’s lead guitarist between 1981 and 1983. He is credited with co-writing six of the band’s early songs but was kicked out of the band before the group recorded their debut album. Mustaine formed Megadeth shortly after.

“Basic tracks are done. Overdubs now are continuing,” said Ellefson. “I’m sure 2021 will see some new Megadeth music of some form—hopefully, the whole album.”
Ellefson also added that the group remains hopeful of resuming their touring plans next year.
“Touring will open up, and we can drop a record, and the tour dates that we have rescheduled will all go forward as planned. That’s what we’re hoping,” he explained.
Megadeth was scheduled to tour North America with Lamb of God in 2020, but the bands had to postpone the shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new dates are currently set for the second part of 2021.

Back in June, Megadeth’s frontman Dave Mustaine told SiriusXM that the band already has 18 songs lined up for the new record. ]]>Mustaine, who is currently recovering from throat cancer, has released a short video on the band’s official YouTube page where he discusses the art in “Death by Design”, and specifically the story accompanying the song “The Conjuring”.
The song, recorded on 1986’s Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? is a fan favorite, but Mustaine had at one time considered it to be “too evil” to play live. In fact, he only went back to playing it on stage last year, after almost 17 years of not conjuring it up!
“The way that the art has translated in ‘The Conjuring’, it’s probably some of the best art of the entire project,” says Mustaine. “You look at those images and they’re so mind-blowing you just can’t help but look and get interested. It makes you engrossed and you do more and more and that’s how it is,” he summarized.

]]>And the best part: It’s on YouTube! Watch it below.
Ellefson and Poland had not collaborated commercially since the mid-’80s when Poland left Megadeth. That lineup — Ellefson, Poland, Mustaine, and Samuelson — is responsible for Megadeth’s sophomore album Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? which many fans consider to be the best thrash metal ever recorded.
This joint performance came about after Poland lent his virtuoso guitar skills to Ellefson’s debut solo album Sleeping Giants, which came out earlier this year. According to Blabbermouth, Ellefson said that “when we were working on putting together the record, Thom [Hazaert] had brought up the idea to Chris of him playing on a track, and somehow it all worked out.”
“Honestly, the whole thing was a blur,” recounted Poland. “Thom had told me they were working on what would become the ‘Sleeping Giants’ record, and I asked him if I could play on it. It was great to reconnect with David, musically, and the song has such a great energy.”
The question now on every metalhead’s heart is if there’s any chance we might live to see Chris Poland rejoin Megadeth. And while it seems very unlikely, a fan can dream, right?

]]>Megadeth and Five Finger Death Punch will cross the continent in January and February 2020. The two heavyweights will be joined by Bad Wolves, a hard rock act from Los Angeles.
Five Finger Death Punch guitarist, Zoltan Bathory, expressed his excitement towards the upcoming tour and said that Bad Wolves broke out big in recent years. “Megadeth needs no introduction, they are absolute legends,” said Bathory.
The guitarist continued: “Dave Mustaine’s contribution to this genre is simply immeasurable. I consider him one of the founding fathers of not just thrash but heavy Metal in general because his riffs and guitar playing have influenced everyone that was in Megadeth’s blast radius… and that’s a big radius.”
Mustain also wished to warn the fans not to miss this tour. “Hindsight is always 20-20, but looking back it’s still a bit fuzzy. Looking forward, you’ll be in trouble if you don’t come see us with Five Finger Death Punch in early 2020. You don’t wanna miss it. See you soon!”
Both bands are currently in the process of producing a new album. Mustaine has entered the studio while dealing with throat cancer.

Curiously, this picture was probably taken during the 94-95 tour in support of Youthanasia, an album which contained the track “The Killing Road”. According to its lyrics, Mustaine was already well aware of how costly extended touring could get 25 years ago.
This behavior’s quite insane, but we do it for the fame, sings Mustaine just before breaking into the chorus: I lost my mind, I lost all my money, I lost my life to the Killing Road. He then concludes with the sentiment: There’s nothing special about the road, It’s just another haul, It’s just too damn long that’s all.
While Megadeth’s planned tour this year has been canceled due to Dave’s illness, the band is still expected to be involved in some capacity with their own brainchild, Megacruise, which will take place October 13-19.

Earlier this year, Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine told Music Radar that the album comprises of 13 or 14 songs rather than the contracted 8.
“My contract says I’m only supposed to do eight songs a record and I just can’t do that – it feels like cheating,” he revealed.
“When I grew up listening to vinyl, it was a lot easier to buy a record and be happy with 45 minutes of music. When the digital world came, the paradigm changed – a musical offering needs a lot more. People aren’t satisfied and hit fast-forward a lot. So right now, we know we’re off to a good start. This new material is only going to get better and better.”
