]]>Deftones hit the Outdoor Theatre stage at Coachella this past weekend, and Moreno dropped hints about their new music while chatting with KROQ.
“We have a whole record recorded all musically. And it’s pretty much my job right now to finish up the vocals… We’re not really in a rush. We want it to be great. I think that’s most important. But it is coming, and, yeah – it’s really good,” said Moreno.
Despite already finishing up most of the album, Moreno said they still don’t have “a definite timeframe” for the album’s release. He also said they’re really excited about what they’ve been working on and described their new sound as “invigorated”.
Deftones haven’t dropped a new album since Ohms in 2020, which produced singles “Ohms”, “Genesis”, and “Ceremony”. It was met with critical acclaim and received a nomination for best rock performance at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. It debuted at No. 5 in both the UK and the US and hit the top ten in several countries around the world.

]]>Record producer Monte Conner recently shared a story on social media about how he tried to sign Deftones while working with Roadrunner Records. According to Conner, the band’s manager sent him their demo, and he was “instantly blown away”. However, he also saw more than a few issues with their name.
Conner explains that the word “def” was too closely associated with legendary producer Rick Rubin and his Def American Recordings. At the time, Rubin made an effort to move away from the word, which became “mainstream,” and even changed the name of his record company to American Recordings.
On the other hand, Conner was concerned that the word “tones” would make the band appear like they were part of the “ska” movement that was on full blast in the 1990s.
Frontman Chino Moreno and the rest of the band were willing to listen to Conner’s suggestions and recommended “Engine No. 9”, the title of one of their early songs, as an alternative. However, the deal with Roadrunner Records never materialized, so the Deftones got to keep their name.
“Six months later, they signed to Maverick Records, releasing ‘Adrenaline’ in 1995, and the rest is history,” Conner added. “Seemingly overnight, the album took off, the band blew up, and every metal fan across the globe was wearing a Deftones T-shirt. I sure felt silly.”

]]>Deftones’ last album Gore hit the shelves in 2016, and Cunningham explained they wanted to do things a bit differently this time around and took things slowly so they would enjoy it more.
“We stretched everything out over the course of a couple of years, rather than blasting through in one go. The process has been mixed with about a year-long break, that we all agreed upon. Being rested and taking that time off really made us appreciate what we’re doing even more,” Cunningham told Mixdown.
The band’s ninth studio album still doesn’t have a title or a release date, but we’re excited about it nevertheless. It will see them teaming up with superstar rock producer Terry Date, for the first time since their 2003 self-titled album.

]]>The band’s frontman Chino Moreno released an official statement welcoming all the fans and their special guests to their upcoming tour, their first across North America in a long time.
“We’re super excited to have Gojira spending the summer with us, and Poppy will be a really fun addition as well. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone this summer. It’s been a minute,” said Moreno.
Deftones will kick things off on July 27th with a concert at Portland, Oregon, and they’ll keep on touring all summer long, until wrapping it up in Denver on September 5th. This will be their first full tour across the US since 2017, but they’ve been pretty busy with other shows, including their own Dia de Los Deftones festival.

]]>In a recent interview with NBC 7 San Diego, Moreno revealed they’ve been working on this record for about a year now, but they’re not rushing anything and don’t want to share new music with the world until they’re happy with the final product.
“Our biggest thing is making sure that it’s good. We’ll be performing it, once it’s out, for the next two or three years, so we want to be sure it’s the best it can be and want to make everyone happy – including ourselves,” explained the singer.
Moreno also said they got “into experimental sort of modes” and “felt really free” while recording their ninth studio album. It will serve as the follow-up to their 2016 record Gore, and Deftones vocalist promises it will hit the shelves sometime next year.

]]>“Introducing our 2019 #DiaDeLosDeftones x @BelchingBeaver beer, hitting select distributors in CA tomorrow, 8/17,” reads the announcements. “This limited release Mexican Lager will soon be available in other US & international markets.”
Deftones have collaborated with Belching Beaver Brewery several times in the past to create limited beer editions, with their 2018’s creation Phantom Bride available year-round. Belching Beaver’s site describes Phantom Bride as “named after the ethereal song by the one and only Deftones, Phantom Bride IPA is a blend of Amarillo, Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops delicately balanced for the perfectly drinkable mix of citrus and hoppy goodness.”
They go on to refer to it as “a truly original Deftones/ Belching Beaver collaboration envisioned by Chino Moreno and skillfully crafted by Thomas Peters,” and advise that proper usage is to “sit back, put on your headphones and drink away.”
Deftones will host their second Dia de los Deftones concert on November 2nd in San Diego. Supporting them, among others, will be Gojira, JPEGMAFIA, Youth Code and Brutus. What better way to enjoy the show than sipping down a cold, refreshing, Deftones beer?
