“Old Town Road” previously shared the record with “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, but this country-trap song managed to outrank them both.

Lil Nas X was head over heels after his debut single broke this major record. He celebrated his accomplishment in an emotional emoji-filled Instagram post and described his incredible journey to the top of the charts.

“Did I know it would become the longest-running number 1 song of all time? NO! But I am so thankful that this blessing has been placed upon me. This song has changed my life and the way I see the world around me in less than a year,” the rapper wrote in the post.

This meme-worthy single became so popular that it caught the eye of country legend Billy Ray Cyrus. He joined forces with Lil Nas X and recorded a remix which gave rise to dozens of memes after its release on April 5.

Despite the fact it’s a strange hybrid between rap and country, “Old Town Road” is nowhere to be found on Billboard’s country chart. They removed it after coming to the conclusion it doesn’t embrace “enough elements of today’s country music”.

Lil Nas X was disappointed by their decision but said it’s just the kind of things that happens when you’re trying to do something new.
