The post Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Shares His Thoughts About Recent Emo Revival appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>Armstrong recently set down for an interview with The Guardian alongside his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. At one point, they were asked how they felt about the revival of 90s/00s punk and emo music in the last few years, and the Green Day frontman shared some interesting thoughts.
“I think streaming and the way things go viral now [is fuelling it]… Emo was dead – then just five years later we’re having emo club nights. Like, aren’t you supposed to wait another five years for this? My Chemical Romance just broke up!” joked Armstrong.
He singled out The Walters and Deftones as two bands whose emo-leaning music experienced a huge boom after their songs started showing up in TikTok videos. He added that there’s “this new algorithmic way of discovering new stuff”, where people are paying less attention to radio and other traditional platforms.
Green Day’s next album Saviors will be released on January 19, 2024, and it was preceded by singles “The American Dream Is Killing Me”, “Look Ma, No Brains!”, and “Dilemma”.

]]>Armstrong was visiting a local pub, Slim Jim’s Liquor Store, one night and was in attendance for a show by a band called Borderline Toxic. They were playing a set of covers that night and, at one point, started doing a rendition of Green Day’s “Basket Case”. Hearing his own song, Armstrong couldn’t help himself but jump on the stage and take part in the performance.
Borderline Toxic later shared the footage of the performance on their official Instagram.
“The moment your band gets joined on stage by your childhood idol to sing their own song with you… in your favourite dive bar!!” the band wrote in the caption.
Borderline Toxic’s lead singer Kerry Glass later told BBC that she was over the moon after playing with Armstrong as Green Day is one of her favorite bands.
“I used to sit in my bedroom and listen to all their albums. So I’ve got zero chills over this. This is amazing,” Glass shared.

“Manic Monday” was written by the legendary Prince, and was part of The Bangles’ second studio album Different Light. The track served as the first single from the record and ended up being a huge success, peaking at No.2 on US Billboard Hot 100.
Billie Joe Armstrong kicked off No Fun Mondays a couple of weeks ago, covering Tommy James & The Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now” in the first edition of the series and Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory” in the second.
Also, Armstrong has been using the time spent in quarantine to write some new music, revealing that he already has six new songs finished in a recent chat with Kerrang!. Green Day’s most recent album, Father of All …, came out in February.

]]>The pop-punk record was released in 2000 and had a more acoustic feel than their other albums. Although the album received some positive reviews, it is notoriously known as being one of their less popular musical creations.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Armstrong has now revealed that he would love to go back and re-record Warning, which features the band’s iconic track “Minority.” This followed the pop-punk legend being asked to discuss 15 songs from across the band’s career.
“I’d like to go back and re-record that album [Warning],” Armstrong revealed. “I want to go back and just do everything more live, because I think ‘Minority’ live is a lot better than it came out on the album. But that’s just one of those things that you think about too much.
“I started getting into playing more acoustic guitar, and I really wanted to have more for ‘Warning’,” he recalled. “And there was also a lot of kind of bad pop-punk that was starting to happen, and I wanted to go against that genre. This felt like the next step.”
Green Day’s thirteenth album Father Of All Motherf*****s will be released on February 7.

]]>Just before the band started a-rocking, Stern asked singer Billie Joel Armstrong about the painful background of the song. Armstrong obliged by revealing that the title of the song is actually words he had said to his mother when his father passed away. The future Greenday frontman was merely 10 years old at the time.
“I think it’s something that just stayed with me; the month of September being that anniversary that always is just, I don’t know, kind of a bummer,” recalled Armstrong. “But it’s weird. When things happen like that when you’re that young, it’s almost like life starts at year zero, or something like that.”
“I think about him every day, really,” Armstrong continued when Stern asked if he still “actively thinks” of his father. “I kinda avoided writing about him for many years, and then finally having a breakthrough like that felt good. It wasn’t like a negative emotion so much, but it was just kind of like honoring him.”

It wouldn’t be strange for Billie Joe Armstrong to venture into recording music with someone else than his Green Day bandmates. He has previously had numerous side projects including bands like Pinhead Gunpowder, The Network, and Foxboro Hot Tubs.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that Billie Joe Armstrong has neglected his main band. Green Day released their 12th studio album Revolution Radio in 2016 and reached number one on the US Billboard 200. The album received positive reviews and was labeled as the band’s “most focused work in years.” Green Day then embarked on a worldwide tour to promote the album, before taking a break in order to focus on making a movie based on their now-classic album American Idiot with HBO. According to Armstrong, the movie is well underway, with the script being almost finished.
“We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.” said Armstrong in 2017.
