Billie Elish’s debut album just became the second biggest selling album of the year.

According to figures released today, the alternative singer songwriter’s debut When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go has sold over 250,000 units in the first week of release. It was also streamed over 100 million times and only a quarter of these was by us… (we kid!)

As it stands, the album sales are topped only by Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next. For a first album, coming second to Ariana Grande is a pretty impressive feat.

In a 4/5 review, Hot Pop Today said of the album: “Overall, Billie Eilish’s debut album is the kind of brave and fiery album we needed when we were 17. Eilish is unafraid to explore all sides of her character and this is reflected in the way she playfully experiments with her music, flitting between an anxious and empowered state. There is, of course, room for improvement but we cannot wait to see what the rising star does next.”

Before we’d even played the first track, we knew that Billie Eilish’s highly anticipated debut album would be different. For starters, the album cover is pretty scary and the opener is 14 seconds long and is titled “!!!!!!!”.

Eilish records herself pulling out her Invisalign and introduces the album with a roaring laugh and gets straight down to it with “Bad guy”, an unexpected surprise. It’s more like a trap song than the rock tune we were expecting and has a creepy vibe and eerie sex appeal. It’s hard to believe that Eilish is only 17 and she is already experimenting so boldly with her music.

In “xanny“, everything is stripped back and she distorts her voice in a way that tricks you into thinking one of your earphones are broken. Even with the crackly distortion, you can’t help but think “oh man, this girl can sing.”

The lyrics across the album are a mix of badass hisses and grinding anxiety. Every now and then, Eilish throws us a lyric that gets us cracking a smile. In “All the good girls go to hell” she sings “All the good girls go to Hell / ’cause even God herself has enemies” and we’re feeling all feminine and empowered. In this track, she also introduces some electric guitar which returns in the subsequent tracks.

The slightly cheesy but gorgeous “Wish you were gay” is an anthem for every girl who accidentally fell in love with her best friend growing up. She sings: “To spare my pride / To give your lack of interest an explanation / Don’t say I’m not your type / Just say that I’m not your preferred sexual orientation.” The track shows off her lush vocals as does the subsequent ‘when the party’s over’, which sees Eilish dueting with a piano.

The early single “Bury a friend” is also an album highlight and another good example of Eilish’s creativity with a vocoder. The penultimate track “I love you” is stunning and the album closer, “goodbye”, is a quieter moment. The track is a culmination of every song on the album rewinding all the way back to the album opener “Bad guy”.

Overall, Billie Eilish’s debut album is the kind of brave and fiery album we needed when we were 17. Eilish is unafraid to explore all sides of her character and this is reflected in the way she playfully experiments with her music, flitting between an anxious and empowered state. By now, we’re guessing that you have heard of Billie Elish. The seventeen year old singer and songwriter has a gorgeous voice which is mature beyond her years and she is writing songs that most artists don’t manage to achieve until their mid-twenties.

The grunge artist has impressed one person in particular and she is beyond flattered with his comments. This person is none other than Foo Fighters and Nirvana legend, Dave Grohl.

Speaking to Radio X she responded to Grohl’s comments: “I can’t even believe that. Are you kidding? He said rock isn’t dead because of me. Dude, I grew up on that s**t. Huh? Rock? Like, I can’t.”

For some context, Grohl posted a photo of Billie Elish in concert on Instagram and shared his admiration for the rising star.

“I went to go see Billie Eilish not too long ago,” he explained. “Oh my god man. Unbelievable. My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish. And what I’m seeing happening with my daughters is the same revolution that happened to me at their age. My daughters are listening to Billie Eilish and they’re becoming themselves through her music. She totally connects to them.”

He also said: “When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, I’m like…s**t man….rock n roll is not even close to being dead…”

Billie Elish will release her debut album March 29.

One debut album we have particularly been looking forward to this year is Billie Elish.

From what we have heard of Billie so far, she uses her gorgeous voice and talent to get real about pain and suffering. When it comes to opening up about struggles with mental health, she holds nothing back. Perhaps this is why fans often comment on her videos that they “feel her pain” and are “crying along with her”.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Beats, Eilish said of her debut record: “The album is basically what happens when you fall asleep. For me, in every song in the album there’s sleep paralysis. There’s night terrors, nightmares, lucid dreams.”

She continued: “I’ve always had really, really bad night terrors. I’ve had sleep paralysis five times. All my dreams are lucid so I control them. I know that I’m dreaming what I’m dreaming, so I don’t even know. Sometimes I’ll have dreams where the thing that was in my dream will happen the next day. It’s so weird. Its’ so weird.”
