The fourth season of Stranger Things is out, and its soundtrack is a true love letter to the ’80s. If we had to pick a single stand-out song that made a splash this season, it would be Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, but how did this iconic hit end up on the beloved Netflix show?

Spoilers are ahead, but if you’ve already seen the new season of Stranger Things, you know that “Running Up That Hill” happens to be Max’s favorite song and that she used it to break Vecna’s spell and escape Upside Down in the episode “Dear Billy”.

The show’s music supervisor, Nora Felder, discussed the song’s role with Variety, explaining that she spent a lot of time finding a song that perfectly fit Max’s complex feelings.

“It immediately struck me with its deep chords of the possible connection to Max’s emotional struggles and took on more significance as Bush’s song marinated in my conscious awareness,” said Felder.

Once Felder found the perfect song, they just had to get Kate Bush on board. Sony Music Publishing’s Wende Crowley received the request and sent the singer script pages and footage for a review because she’s very selective when it comes to licensing her music.

It turns out Bush was already a big fan of the show, and it didn’t take her long to give Felder permission to use the song in Max’s pivotal scene. It was the right choice to make because “Running Up That Hill” reached No. 1 on iTunes after being featured on Stranger Things.

Netflix gave us another must-see teen series with I Am Not Okay With This, and its nostalgic soundtrack, filled with classic rock songs and power ballads, perfectly captured its angsty vibe.

Netflix’s latest series tells the story of a teenage misfit Sydney Novak, who’s slowly coming to terms with the fact she has telekinetic powers. Like some of the previous teen dramas on this streaming service, Not Okay has a strong ‘80s esthetics, despite the fact it’s obviously not set in this era.

In addition to Stanley’s favorite fictional band Bloodwitch (songs performed by Blur’s Graham Coxon), the soundtrack for this show also included classic songs from Paul Young, Bonnie Tyler, Pixies, and Roxette, and co-creator Jonathan Entwistle explained where he found inspiration for this unusual musical mix.

“I’m kind of enjoying Midwestern ballads from the ‘40s and ‘50s at the moment right now, back when the Midwest was amazing. I quite enjoy that as an aesthetic. But, there’s John Hughes [references] in here too,” Entwistle told Refinery29.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are no strangers to creating groundbreaking soundtracks, but they’re taking things to a whole new level with Watchmen by releasing three volumes of music featured in HBO’s new show.

The Nine Inch Nails members teased the news on social media, by sharing the release date for all three albums – November 4th, November 25th, and December 16th. They will come out as the series progresses and the final one will hit the shelves only a day after the Watchmen season finale.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have a long list of movie scores under their belt, and one Oscar win for their work on The Social Network. Watchmen is one of their rare joint TV credits, but they’ve always been on the top of Damon Lindelof’s wish list for his new show.

“They signed up on faith and faith alone. They get the scripts at the same time the actors do. They started writing the music even before we shot the pilot so we can get a sense in our heads of what it would sound like. It’s been incredible,” Lindelof told Entertainment Weekly.

Euphoria gave us one of the best TV scores of the year and ended with an epic musical number performed by Zendaya and Labrinth. The British singer recorded dozens of tracks for this popular teen show, and they’ll soon be released as an album.

This soundtrack marks Labrinth’s first project as a lead composer, which was written and recorded in collaboration with Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson. Working on this score was a transformative experience for the British artist, and he’s hoping that everyone who listens to it will embrace feeling something.

“My experience with Euphoria has made me a better musician. It was a dream come true to give wings and add magic to the different storylines. It was a collaborative effort among Sam Levinson, the crew and the cast – I only added texture to an already phenomenal show,” said the singer in a statement.

Labrinth’s Euphoria score is being released on October 4th, and it will feature a total of 26 tracks, collected from the show’s first season.

The third season of Stranger Things came out a couple of days ago, but all the true fans already binge-watched the entire thing. Like every chapter before it, this one was filled with epic musical moments, but one of the songs from the soundtrack really stood out.

If you watched the new season right away, you already know we’re talking about Dustin and Suzie’s rendition of “The NeverEnding Story” from the cult 1984 movie of the same name. The duo performed their epic cover during one of the crucial scenes, and many fans agree this moment actually shaped the future of several characters.

We won’t get into details as many people still haven’t seen the new season, but it was pretty interesting to learn how this moment came to be. Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Gabriella Pizzolo (Suzie) weren’t familiar with the song before, but it didn’t take them long to learn it – and spread it around the set.

“We ended up harmonizing together, which I didn’t expect. It just took like a day to learn all the words. Definitely, by the end of the day it was stuck in everyone’s heads,” recalled Matarazzo in an interview with Hollywood Reporter.
