The National performed at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston on Wednesday night, and during the show, the band decided to honor the late musician Daniel Johnston. The group mashed Johnston’s classic “Devil Town” with their track “I Am Not in Kansas” and delivered an emotional tribute to the iconic lo-fi singer-songwriter.

Johnston died on September 10th, after suffering a heart attack. He was 58-years-old.

“That was for Daniel Johnston, who left us,” The National frontman Matt Berninger told the audience after playing the cover on which they were joined by Kate Stables, Hannah Georgas and Kyle Resnick on backing vocals. “And we’re still here.”

“Devil Town” is the opening track of Daniel Johnston’s 1990 album. Over the years, several music acts covered the song including Bright Eyes and Beck,

Although Johnston wasn’t popular in the mainstream circles, he managed to gain a cult following on the alternative music scene during his career. He released 20 albums, with most of them being recorded in his improvised home studio. His most recent record was Space Ducks, which came out in 2012.

The National just announced they will perform a series of “special evenings” in five major cities around the world. The first of these “special evenings” will take place in Paris on April 16th, after which the band will visit London, New York, Toronto, before wrapping up the trip in Los Angeles on April 26th.

While The National didn’t reveal much info about these events, titled “A Special Evening With the National,” it is expected they will give the fans an opportunity to see American rockers playing in a more intimate atmosphere.

During this trip, The National may also present some new music. The band reportedly finished their new album, and is expected to present it in 2019. The news about the record surfaced when management company Worlds End confirmed that producer Peter Katis, band’s longtime collaborator, finished mixing The National’s upcoming album.

The band’s last studio effort came in 2017, when they presented critically acclaimed Sleep Well Beast. The record topped the charts in UK and several other countries while peaking at No.2 on US Billboard 200. It also received several accolades including the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Who says that live album releases are not popular anymore? In past couple of years, we have seen fewer musicians deciding to produce a live LP, but The National decided to take the opposite strategy. After releasing their fourth live album, Boxer (Live in Brussels), as a Record Store Day 2018 exclusive vinyl LP back in April, the band is now making the album available on digital platforms and CD on July 13th.

The National also released the live rendition of “Fake Empire,” which will be featured on the album. You can listen to it below.

Boxer (Live in Brussels) was recorded in Belgium’s capital on November 9th, 2017, and saw the band playing their 2007 release Boxer in full.

The National released their most recent studio album, Sleep Well Beast, in September 2017. The album was an absolute hit with the critics and also managed to win a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album at the 60th Grammy Awards. It topped the charts in several countries, including the UK, while reaching number 2 on the US Billboard 200.
