It’s been five years since Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds dropped their latest studio album Ghosteen, and its follow-up is on the horizon. Wild God is coming our way this August, and Cave described it as a “deeply and joyously infectious” record.

Wild God will be released on August 30 through PIAS, and it will feature a total of ten new songs. In addition to the title track “Wild God”, it will also include songs “Final Rescue Attempt”, “Cinnamon Horses”, “Long Dark Night”, and “Song of the Lake”.

The Bad Seeds frontman said this album reflects back the emotional state of the writers and musicians who made it and promised it will lift and move us once we hear it.

“I hope the album has the effect on listeners that it’s had on me. It bursts out of the speaker, and I get swept up with it. It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious,” said Cave in a statement.

Wild God will mark Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ first studio album since Ghosteen in 2019. This double album was conceived as the final part of a trilogy, which also included the band’s previous LPs Push the Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016).

It’s been a while since Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds dropped their last studio album, and they might sound quite different when they come back. Cave recently dropped hints about their next LP and said he believes they couldn’t make “an old-school Bad Seeds record” again.

The iconic singer-songwriter recently set down with NME for an in-depth interview and discussed many topics, including the next Bad Seeds record.

“I don’t think we could make an old-school Bad Seeds record anymore where it’s basically a rock band playing. I don’t see that happening. Not that this next [Bad Seeds] record is ambient – it’s not at all – but I just don’t see us going back to that basic rock’n’roll style,” said Cave.

He also addressed the possibility of making another Grinderman record, referring to the side project that he formed with Bad Seeds members Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey, and Jim Sclavunos. Cave said he could see them making another record, because “Grinderman is essentially improv”, but added it’s also musically challenging since you don’t know what you’re going to get.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds haven’t released a studio album since 2019, and they’ve mostly been busy touring after the release of their latest LP Ghosteen.

Back in June, Nick Cave went to London’s Alexandra Palace and performed a solo piano concert at an empty venue. The performance was captured on camera and is now set for one-off livestream on July 23rd.

The special thing about the stream, titled Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace, is that it will be treated as a live event. The fans will have to purchase the ticket to tune in and won’t be able to pause it. Also, the concert will be shown in just three broadcasts to accommodate different time zones and won’t be available online after that.

According to the press release, the performance features Cave playing “early Bad Seeds and Grinderman, right through to the most recent Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album Ghosteen.”

Nick Cave recently confirmed that he wouldn’t go on scheduled North America tour with The Bad Seeds this year. The Australian musicians supposed to embark on a 20-date trip across Canada and U.S. in September and October but ended up deciding to cancel the shows due to coronavirus pandemic.

In a recent social media post, Cave promised the fans that the canceled gigs would be rescheduled for 2021, with the new dates expected to be made official in the fall.

Back in 2017, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds played an emotional concert at Denmark’s Royal Arena, which was captured on camera and released as a concert film titled Distant Sky.

The film previously had a limited release, but the band recently decided to make it available for free on YouTube as a Christmas gift to their fans.

The Royal Arena was a stop on the group’s tour in support of their highly acclaimed sixteenth studio album Skeleton Tree.

While the set list was focused on the new record, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds also used the opportunity to reach deep into their back catalog, playing songs from their early career like “From Her to Eternity,” the title track of the band’s debut album from 1984.

Distant Sky was first released in early 2018 when it was screened in theaters for one night. After that, the film was made available for streaming on Cave’s website The Red Hand Files but ended up being taken down after several days.

“I’ve been getting many letters on The Red Hand Files asking about access to the Distant Sky Live in Copenhagen movie. Here it is! With Love at Christmas,” Cave wrote on social media.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ 17th studio album is a stripped-back, alluring meditation on grief and what comes after.

Ghosteen dropped without any prior warning. Just a week before its release, Nick Cave let fans know that 68 minutes of new music would be coming our way. The record is haunting and at times painful. Nick Cave’s voice is rich with emotion from start to finish and listening often sounds like what it must be like to get a true glimpse into the soul of another.

The opening track “Spinning Song” begins with a series of ambient sounds and echoing cries from Cave. “Bright Horses” is just Cave and the piano with melodic orchestral interludes. There are no drumbeats and “Red Right Hand” seems like a lifetime ago. Some artists may begin to lose their range as they grow older but on “Bright Horses” it seems to be the case that Cave’s has grown. His vocals seem to say the most when there are no lyrics. His vocal interludes are saturated with emotion and each note cuts deeper than the one before.

By “Waiting For You” we are moved to silence. The track is a meditation on grief and loss and its relationship with faith. Cave’s voice sounds stronger than ever and at the same time, it sounds like he is close to breaking. He sings: “Well sometimes a little bit of faith can go a long long way / Your soul is my anchor, never asked to be freed / Well sleep now, sleep now, take as long as you need.” The lyrics are poignant and they are delivered with such profound sincerity that the listener may find themselves moved to tears.

In the midst of the album, “Sun Forrest” comes like a punch to the chest. The ambient sounds weigh in with devastating lyrics and yet Cave insists that he is waiting for “the future to roll in.” Here, Cave demonstrates his unfailing lyrical ability. After times of tragedy, finding the words to say is one of the greatest challenges of the poet. Cave’s ability to create lyrics that share his profoundly personal experience of loss while at the same time creating something which resonates with those grieving is a remarkable talent.

The fourteen-minute album closer “Hollywood” is a remarkable highlight. The track holds the listener’s attention from start to finish and is the perfect way to close this mesmerizing, heart-breaking record. It could perhaps be that Ghosteen is Nick Cave’s finest work yet only the listener’s experience will inevitably be profoundly personal.

5/5

It turns out that Nick Cave was in the studio this past couple of months and he has a new album. The legendary Australian musician recently revealed on his fan page The Red Hand Files that he and The Bad Seeds are putting out a new record, titled Ghosteen, next week.

One fan posted a question on The Red Hand Files asking Cave when could he expect his next album and the musician gave him an unexpected answer.

“You can expect a new album next week. It is called Ghosteen. It is a double album,” Cave responded.

Cave also revealed that the first part of the album will consist of eight songs, while the second part will be made out of two love songs which are linked by a spoken piece.

“The songs on the first album are the children. The songs on the second album are their parents. Ghosteen is a migrating spirit,” he added while following up the first response with the album’s cover.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ last studio album Skeleton Tree came out in 2016. The band had a couple of more releases after that, including compilation album Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and EP Distant Sky: Live in Copenhagen.

It appears that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are almost ready to gift the fans their 17th studio album. During his recent Conversations With Nick Cave event in Melbourne, Cave discussed several things and decided to give the fans an update on the new record.

The 61-year-old musician said that the band “nearly finished” their new record adding that he thinks it will be “amazing.”

“We’ve really nearly finished a new record, I would say,” said Cave according to an eyewitness. “And it’s an amazing thing in my opinion.”

“I’m very, very excited about it,” he added.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ last studio effort, titled Skeleton Tree, landed in September 2016. The album received critical acclaim, and was described as “breathtakingly beautiful, grief-strewn record, sometimes direct, sometimes allegorical.”  It topped the charts in several countries, including Australia, Poland, and Portugal, while peaking at No.2 at the UK Albums charts and No.27 at Billboard 200.

Back in September 2008, the band also presented an extended play Distant Sky: Live in Copenhagen, which was released on 12” vinyl and as a digital download. The EP was recorded at Copenhagen’s Royal Arena, and contained songs “Jubilee Street,” “Distant Sky,” From Her To Eternity,” “The Mercy Seat.”

St. Vincent is one of the most intriguing music artists of today, and each of her live shows is something special. It wasn’t anything different on Tuesday when she took the stage at the INmusic festival.

Slowly navigating the audience through her biggest hits, St. Vincent looked comfortable on stage rocking her guitar. Everyone looked like they enjoyed every bit of the show, from St. Vincent – who was surprisingly joking around – to fans – who got drawn into the world of St. Vincent’s songs.

Still, there wasn’t much opportunity to catch a break after St. Vincent wrapped up the show with an acoustic version of “Prince Johnny.” While her performance was more than enjoyable, the highlight of the night was iconic Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds.

It was everything you would expect and then some more, at least for Cave’s fans. They know how to embrace the good and bad sides of his music.

The main selling point of this live show was the emotion he managed to translate to the audience. His movement on the stage, the change of mood in his voice and energy that’s bursting out of him during the show is a special thing to witness.

The audience was almost hypnotized by the “king of melancholy,” who was set to touch them as much as possible with his songs about birth, love, death and everything in between.

When we thought the show is over after a 10-minute long rendition of “Stanger Lee,” Cave decided to continue playing, which is a great rarity at music festivals. He topped already great show with songs “Push the Sky Away” and “Rings of Saturn,” and then finally sailed into the night, leaving the audience in awe.
