]]>Hetfield recently made an appearance at Petersen Automotive Museum in LA, where he hosted an exhibition called Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection. During the Q&A part of the exhibition, the vocalist/guitarist was asked whether Metallica has plans to release a new record.
“That’s a great question. We don’t know,” Hetfield responded. “Right now, I’m sitting in Petersen Museum, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen next. That’s the beauty of this.”
Metallica is currently on its worldwide tour which will see the band play at several major festivals in the United States as well as a handful of dates in South America. The group is expected to decide on their future after that, according to Hetfield.
“We’ll sit down and figure out what works best for us,” he added. “Whatever is coming up, we don’t know. And we kind of thrive off of the fear of the unknown — a bit — and being scared just enough to feel alive.”
Metallica’s last studio release came in 2016 when they released Hardwired… to Self-Destruct. The record was received with positive reviews and was a commercial success, topping charts in 30 countries.
