Lil Nas X is currently gearing up for the release of his sophomore studio album, but that’s not the only thing keeping him busy. His documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will arrive on HBO this month, and he recently teased its release with a brand-new trailer.

According to HBO’s official logline, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero captures the creative dynamo and mesmerizing star power of Lil Nas X, by following “the genre-breaking artist as he navigates his meteoric rise to fame, his desire to inspire his fans, and his place in the pantheon of Black queer icons.”

This documentary was filmed over 60 days during his Long Live Montero Tour, and it will be divided into three acts: Rebirth, Transformation, and Becoming. In addition to seeing him tour the world, the first trailer shows the Grammy-winning rapper getting candid about his career and the struggles he faced as a queer Black man.

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, and it’s set to arrive on HBO on January 27. Lil Nas X shared the first trailer less than a week after dropping his comeback single “J Christ”, set to be featured on his upcoming second studio album.

Lil Nas X has been teasing his comeback for quite some time, and he’s finally back with his first single in over a year. The cinematic visual for his highly-anticipated new song “J Christ” is here, and it’s been inspired by “the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.”

The music video for “J Christ” was written and directed by the rapper himself and he shot it in Mexico City. The video opens with lookalikes of Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and many other pop culture icons approaching the gates of heaven, to discover Lil Nas X waiting for them.

As the video progresses, we get to see the Grammy-winning rapper play with religious imagery, while also making several cheeky meta references. We get to watch him face Satan on the basketball court, climb the steps of the Met Gala, and dance in a cheerleading uniform—all while facing Judgement Day.

This music video marks Lil Nas X’s solo directorial debut, but the influence of his previous visuals is pretty obvious, most notably “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”, which scored a Grammy nod for the best music video in 2022.

“J Christ” has been released as the lead single from the rapper’s upcoming second studio album, and he’s yet to share its release date and title with the world.

Lil Nas X recently revealed he’s gearing up for a huge comeback in 2024, and his new music is just around the corner. The Grammy-winning rapper said he’s going to have “the greatest comeback of all time” when he drops a brand-new single next week.

Lil Nas X teased the release of an untitled single, set to hit the shelves on January 12, with a series of posts on social media. He told his rappers that he loves “this constant cycle the world has with [him]”, adding that his next single will prove his naysayers wrong.

“When I started making music, y’all told me I was just another Twitter rapper. Then I made the biggest song of all time. Y’all called me one hit wonder. Then I dropped one of the most streamed albums of the year with 3 top 5 hits… At some point y’all realize I’m god’s favorite,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This isn’t the first new piece of information that Lil Nas X shared about new music. Just last week, he revealed that he wrote and directed his own music video for the first time and promised he’ll “go bigger than before”. This upcoming single will mark his first release since 2022, but the Long Live Montero Tour has been keeping him pretty busy ever since.

Lil Nas X has given us many amazing music videos over the years, and his next one will be directed by none other than himself! The Grammy-winning rapper teased the start of his next era by dropping hints about the upcoming self-directed visual on social media.

Lil Nas X ended 2023 by sharing some exciting news with his fans on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The rapper tweeted, “Wrote AND directed my own music video for the first time. Excited for y’all to see. It’s the best one yet!”

Lil Nas X is no stranger to dropping hints about new music on social media, and this is exactly how his fans learned they’ll have to wait a little bit longer for his next album. Earlier this year, the rapper said he could easily drop new music if he wanted to, but added he has to build momentum and “go bigger than before” with his next project.

Lil Nas X’s debut studio album Montero hit the shelves in 2021 and scored him his second Grammy nomination for album of the year. It also produced chart-topping singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” ft. Jack Harlow.

Lil Nas X is one of the most fascinating hip-hop artists to emerge in recent years and it was just a matter of time before he got his own documentary. That moment is finally here, and his first documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, this documentary was shot over the course of 60 days during Lil Nas X’s critically acclaimed Long Live Montero Tour. It will offer a “remarkably intimate portrait of an artist on tour navigating identity, family, expectations, and acceptance” during one of the most transformational points of his life.

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and its CEO described it as a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity.

“In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music,” said Bailey in a press release.

Lil Nas X’s rise to prominence started with the release of his viral hit “Old Town Road”, which became the longest-running No. 1 song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His debut album Montero produced No. 1 singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” ft. Jack Harlow severed as the basis for his Long Live Montero Tour.

Glastonbury is one of the year’s most highly-anticipated festivals, and the latest edition lived up to the hype. From Elton John’s historic set to Lewis Capaldi’s emotional stage fright, we’re bringing you some viral moments that this year’s Glastonbury will be remembered by.

Elton John’s Career-Spanning Set

Elton John performed his last UK show at Glastonbury, and it was one for the books! He brought everyone from The Killers’ Brandon Flowers to Rina Sawayama on stage while performing some of his biggest hits.

A-List Surprise Guests

Speaking of surprise guests, Glastonbury was an embarrassment of the riches. Paul McCartney and Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl joined The Pretenders on stage, while Jack Harlow performed “Industry Baby” by Lil Nas X’s side.

Lewis Capaldi’s Stage Fright

Lewis Capaldi was very open about his struggles with Tourette’s syndrome, and his ticks kicked in at Glastonbury. In one of the festival’s most emotional moments, the crowd sang his smash hit “Someone You Loved” after his voice broke, giving him enough time to gain composure.

Rina Sawayama Calling Out Matty Healy

Rina Sawayama delivered one of the festival’s most viral moments when she subtly called out The 1975’s Matty Healy for some of his problematic behavior before performing the song “STFU”.

Lana Del Rey’s Set Cut Short

Lana Del Rey’s performance was dramatically cut short at midnight due to the festival’s curfew, and fans were left with a sour taste in their mouth after security escorted her off stage.

Lil Nas X created quite a splash with his debut studio album Montero, and its follow-up is just around the corner! The Grammy-winning singer recently shared an update on his next album and revealed he’s planning to share it with the world this summer.

Lil Nas X recently discussed his plans for the future with his fans on Twitter after being asked when can we expect his next album to hit the shelves. He replied with “most likely summer”, but he’s yet to make things official because there are many moving parts involved in its production.

“It’s mostly planning now. I could easily just release music but I have to build moments around this s—t. I have to go bigger than before! I love so many songs plus I’m still in the studio making music so it’s [going to] be hard to pick,” the singer wrote on Twitter.

Lil Nas X’s debut album Montero came out in 2021, and it produced chart-topping singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and received nominations for five Grammy Awards, including album of the year.
