]]>With 227,000 equivalent album units earned on its debut, Eternal Sunshine scored the largest week of 2024 for any album so far. It’s Grande’s sixth studio album to hit No. 1, following the success of Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014), Sweetener (2018), Thank U, Next (2019), and Positions (2020).
Grande promoted the release of her latest LP with the second single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”, which did pretty well on the Hot 100 chart. It blasted in at No. 1 with 32.6 million streams and 4.6 million radio airplay audience impressions during its debut week, setting several Hot 100 milestones along the way.
“We Can’t Be Friends” marks Grande’s seventh No. 1 debut on the Hot 100 chart, breaking the record previously held by Taylor Swift. She’s also the first female artist to have two albums produce multiple No. 1 debuts on the Hot 100, after previously topping the chart with “Yes, And?”
Eternal Sunshine came out on March 8, and it also hit No. 1 in several other countries, including the UK and Australia.

]]>Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine created more buzz than any other new album this week, and it was truly worth the wait. She gave us 13 pretty amazing new songs, and the second single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” certainly deserves a spot on your playlist.
Many of our favorite female artists also celebrated International Women’s Day by sharing their new albums with the world. Norah Jones gave us another great collection of songs with Visions, while Kim Gordon dropped her first solo album in five years, The Collective.
This week has also been pretty amazing for our favorite indie and rock bands. Bleachers knocked it out of the park with their self-titled new album, while both The Black Keys and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds gave us a taste of their new music with singles “White God” and “This is Nowhere”.
Laufey, Girl in Red, The Marías, and FLO also made it to our list this week, so check it out and find your next favorite song.

]]>It’s impossible to talk about Eternal Sunshine without reflecting on the drama behind it. Grande’s latest LP was written in the wake of her divorce and she described it as “kind of a concept album ’cause it’s all different heightened pieces of the same story, of the same experience.”
Like the film that inspired its title, the 2004 sci-fi rom-com Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Grande’s new album explores the lengths we go to in an attempt to let go after a failed relationship. It’s a vulnerable record that also manages to find moments of joy in all the mess of having your heart broken and letting go.
Grande welcomed us into the world of Eternal Sunshine with the lead single “Yes, And?”, and the fact it’s not even close to being its strongest song says a lot about the album’s quality. She shows signs of pettiness on this track, but this isn’t a running theme, and she manages to dig deeper as the songs go by.
Eternal Sunshine won’t give us any bops in the vein of “7 Rings” and “Thank U, Next”, but that’s not stopping it from being a no-skips record. Even its weakest songs are a part of the bigger picture, and Grande shines her brightest when she’s embracing her R&B roots, on such songs as “Bye” and “The Boy is Mine”, or giving us synth-bop vibes with “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”.
The album’s final song, “Ordinary Things” is a perfect closer because it sees Grande’s grandmother sharing some wisdom about relationships, “Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight. That’s the worst thing to do, don’t ever, ever do that. And if you can’t, and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place, get out.”
Grande doesn’t use her full vocal capabilities on Eternal Sunshine, and it’s been a while since she had, but this album isn’t weaker for it. It might not be her best or most radio-friendly record, but it shows signs of maturity, compassion, and grace and it’s a perfect reminder that there’s always sunshine after the rain.

This song serves as the only introduction to Grande’s new sound, and she’s not planning to release any other singles from this LP just yet. The Grammy winner explained she wants her fans to experience this body of work in full and thanked them for their patience.

“There truly are no words that suffice. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this dream come true and for sprinkling your brilliance and magic on my little song, Mariah Carey. It means more to me than I could ever possibly articulate,” wrote Grande on Instagram.
This isn’t the first collaboration between the two vocal powerhouses. Grande previously hopped on the remix of Carey’s Christmas song “Oh Santa!” in 2020 alongside Jennifer Hudson and went on to make a cameo at one of Carey’s Christmas shows in New York.
“Yes, And?” was released in early January, as the lead single from Grande’s upcoming album Eternal Sunshine. It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 following its release, becoming Grande’s sixth No.1 debut and eighth chart-topping single overall.

The house and pop-infused track, produced by Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, debuted on streaming services and got a seven-inch vinyl release. It was played more than 11.2 million times globally in its first 24 hours on Spotify, becoming Grande’s most-played debut on the platform.
Grande’s most recent full studio album was 2020’s Positions. Since then, the singer has been caught up in several projects, including serving as a coach on Season 21 of the reality singing competition The Voice. She also landed the lead role of Glinda Upland in the two-part film adaptation of the musical Wicked. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: Part One is slated for release on November 27, 2024.
