]]>Ridings already won us over with her soulful singles “Lost Without You” and “You Mean the World to Me”, but the wait for her first album was pretty long. After several pushbacks, it finally hit the shelves on July 19th, and it perfectly captured the feelings of loneliness and melancholia that this artist dealt while writing it.
“The universal theme of this album, specifically because it was written over such a long period of time, is actually loneliness, which I know sounds a bit sad, but I feel like growing up I was so isolated that this was the only time that I could kind of be myself,” said Freya Ridings in an interview with Reuters.
The young artist always drew inspiration from female songwriters, who weren’t scared to dive deep and bare their soul. Seeing people like Adele and Florence Welch succeed gave her inspiration to keep going, and she’s hoping to do the same for the younger generation of artists.
“Having strong female lyric-writing role models while growing up meant so much to me. It’s something I’m so passionate about now, showing young girls that they can absolutely write their own songs,” explained Ridings while chatting with Irish Times.

]]>“I am always drifting in-between worlds,” MorMor told NME in an interview. “I guess I like making music that’s dream-like but also melancholic. ‘Get Away’ was definitely inspired by a David Lynch [Twin Peaks creator] world as there’s this innocence and openness to it, but it can still be haunting too.”
One of the characteristics that make MorMor’s hazy EP unique is his distinctive falsetto. He floats seamlessly between piercing high notes and soothing low notes, showing off his impressive range. Ultimately though, what makes MorMor’s voice special is its ability to capture his emotion honestly.
“I made the ‘Some Place Else EP’ in two months,” he explained. “It is painfully sparse in places, but looking back I was processing a really painful situation and the music was my escapism, hence the title. It captured the pain I felt that Winter. I wanted a level of honesty, pain, and truth in the music, so it isn’t overproduced or too groovy.”

]]>Kelsey Lu grew up surrounded by art and music thanks to her parents, and her classical cello training prepared her for greater things to come. After collaborating with several major artists, including Solange and Florence + the Machine, she decided to embark on a solo adventure.
“When I was younger I didn’t have an idea of where I saw myself. I’ve been strategically floating, so wherever my music needed me to be felt right to me at the time. A lot of people around me have said ‘You’re going to be a star, kid!’” said Kelsey Lu in an interview with The Sunday Morning Herald.
The only thing she could do is say “Thank you” to people who believed in her, and it turned out they were right.
Lu’s debut album Blood gave us several impressive singles, but she’s still figuring it all out and constantly getting out of her comfort zone. “What drives me is finding the differences. It’s easy for us to get trapped into one state of being or being comfortable in one place, and while that’s all fine, I think that it’s important for us to explore things that we’re not either totally comfortable with, or that we never even knew we’re comfortable with,” said Kelsey Lu while chatting with Billboard.

]]>German singer Au/Ra is her spiritual successor, and it’s just a matter of time before the world learns her name.
Jamie Lou Stenzel describes herself as a “dork that makes music”, and the way she picked her stage name proves she’s not exaggerating. Au/Ra is the name of the character from her “Lord of the Rings” fan fiction, and she picked it by putting together two elements from the periodic system – gold (Au) and radium (Ra).
Music was always in her genes as her dad just happens to be renowned German producer Torsten Stenzel. He was also the first person to advise her to pick a different career path. “I first approached my dad about wanting to sing professionally when I was 10 years old, and he was like ‘No, music is super tough, go be a lawyer – you’re good at arguing!’ And clearly I was, because I convinced him to let me do this!’” said Au/Ra in an interview with NME.
People in the US are yet to learn her name, but this 16-year-old already made a splash in Europe with nightclub anthem “Panic Room” and Alan Walker collaboration “Darkside”. Her music is inspired by current topics and popular culture, but her main goal is to use her art to tackle issues that she considers important – including bullying and mental health.

“It’s really insane. I think when you’re sort of in the eye of the storm, it’s such a difficult feeling to grasp. Obviously, I’m so excited and stoked to be here… It’s definitely something that I’ve wanted for a long time,” said the young star while discussing her success with Billboard.
