This week marked one full year since Dolores O’Riordan died, and lots of music stars remembered the late Cranberries’ lead singer in one way or another. Rapper Vic Mensa decided to do so by covering Cranberries’ hit “Zombie” with his new band 93PUNX.

“We connected to ‘Zombie’ because we were born from violence. RIP Dolores,” said the 25-year-old rapper in a statement following the release of the cover.

“Zombie” was written by Dolores O’Riordan in 1993 in response to the deaths caused by IRA bombing in Warrington. Considered a “protest song,” it was originally released in 1994, topping the charts in several European countries.

Mensa, who is a passionate gun control advocate, did justice to his version of “Zombie” and provided us with an enjoyable listen. Hear the cover below.

According to Vic Mensa, he formed 93PUNX as a side project through which he could make music that differs from his usual style. The band will be leaning mostly towards punk and rock sound, with their first EP scheduled to drop in spring. Mensa recently revealed that the release will feature several intricate collaborations, including songs with Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden and Bad Brains’ H.R..
