]]>“We connected to ‘Zombie’ because we were born from violence. RIP Dolores,” said the 25-year-old rapper in a statement following the release of the cover.
“Zombie” was written by Dolores O’Riordan in 1993 in response to the deaths caused by IRA bombing in Warrington. Considered a “protest song,” it was originally released in 1994, topping the charts in several European countries.
Mensa, who is a passionate gun control advocate, did justice to his version of “Zombie” and provided us with an enjoyable listen. Hear the cover below.
According to Vic Mensa, he formed 93PUNX as a side project through which he could make music that differs from his usual style. The band will be leaning mostly towards punk and rock sound, with their first EP scheduled to drop in spring. Mensa recently revealed that the release will feature several intricate collaborations, including songs with Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden and Bad Brains’ H.R..

]]>For this project, Morello recruited an all-star bunch of rappers and producers including Big Boi, RZA, Killer Mike, Steve Aoki and Bassnectar. Also set to make an appearance on The Atlas Underground are Portugal. the Man, Whethan, GZA, Gary Clark Jr., K. Flay, Pretty Lights, Marcus Mumford, Tim McIlrath, Carl Restivo, Nico Stadi, Leikeli47, and Herobust.
Alongside the announcement, the 54-year-old musician also revealed a trailer for the record alongside one of the songs, “We Don’t Need You” featuring Vic Mensa.
“I’ve been devoted both musically and as an activist to fighting injustice at every turn,” said Morello in a statement. “Amid this heightened sense of impending doom, it’s now time to rally the troops in a last-ditch effort to save the planet, and our artistic souls. By challenging the boundaries of what music is and has sounded like before, you can open peoples’ eyes to changing the status quo in society.”
