The iconic Irish rock band U2 seemed to have really warmed up to Las Vegas. The group announced that it is expanding its “Achtung Baby” residency at the city’s Sphere once again by adding four dates to bring the number of played shows to 40.

U2 was initially supposed to play 25 shows, titled U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, at the Sphere from September until December of 2023. The bend envisioned their performances as the unique audio and visual experience that would make the best use of the Sphere’s state-of-the-art technology. The set list featured their seminal album Achtung Baby in full, alongside greatest hits from other studio efforts.

The residency was an immediate success, with shows receiving rave reviews from the critics and causing a huge demand for tickets. This prompted U2 to expand their residency with 16 new shows through February 2024, but this still wasn’t enough.

Now, the band decided to play four more shows, which they call “final.” The concerts will take place on February 23-24 and March 1-2, with the tickets going on sale for the general public on December 8.

U2 has played 19 shows so far as part of U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere residency. The next show is scheduled for December 6. Through the first 17 shows, the band sold 281,000 tickets and earned $109.8 million.

U2’s tenth studio album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, might not be such a resounding success if it wasn’t for Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Corgan revealed that he gave U2’s frontman Bono some advice on how to improve the record, and the band ended up using them.

According to Corgan, back in 2000, he made a trip to Dublin, Ireland, and decided to visit Bono while there. He ended up spending the night at his house, and in the morning, Bono decided to play him the unfinished version of All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

“He’s playing me what became the ‘It’s A Beautiful Day’ album, and it’s not all the way there, but sort of there,” Corgan shared. “He goes, ‘Tell me honestly what you think.’ I’m like, ‘You really want me to give you my opinion?’… And I told him what I thought. They actually used my advice! He let me know later, ‘Hey, we used your advice.’”

Unfortunately, Corgan didn’t share more details on what his advice actually was.

U2 went on to release All That You Can’t Leave Behind in October 2000, and the album was a massive success. It reached No. 1 in more than 30 countries while receiving generally positive reviews from critics.

The record resulted in a number of successful singles like “Beautiful Day,” “Walk On,” and “Elevation,” and is still widely regarded as the band’s best studio effort in the 21st century.

U2’s frontman Bono isn’t a stranger to doing side projects or collaborating with other musicians, but neither of those projects resulted in a solo record so far. However, if that were to happen in the future, he could count on the support of his U2 bandmates.

Making an appearance on the most recent episode of the Rockonteurs podcast, U2 bassist Adam Clayton told hosts Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt that he and the rest of the band—guitarist Edge and drummer Larry Mullen Jr.—would “encourage” Bono’s solo career.

“If Bono wanted to go off and do a solo record, I would encourage him, and certainly everyone else would,” said Clayton.

Clayton also added that he believes “the band is elastic enough” to accept if someone wanted to do their own thing and then “come back.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Clayton also hinted at new U2 projects. He revealed that the band is currently prepping “some acoustic versions” of their past songs while also having a track ready for Universal’s animated musical comedy Sing 2.

You can listen to the entire interview below.

Bono’s most recent ventures outside the U2 were “We Are the People,” the official song of the UEFA Euro 2020, on which he teamed up with Edge and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, and the single “Let Your Love Be Known.”

U2’s vocalist Bono Vox and guitarist Edge recently decided to honor their hard-working road crew by dedicating an acoustic cover of “Stairway to Heaven.” The duo performed the Led Zeppelin’s classic (actually part of it) during Songs From an Empty Room, a quarantine special from Irish artists that was broadcast last week.

According to Bono, the reason why they opted for “Stairway to Heaven” is that the road crew always plays the song when they are setting up their equipment.

“Wherever you go in the world, whatever venue you’re playing—whether it’s the Olympia or 3 Arena or Madison Square Garden—you walk into the venue, and it’s a big moment, and you’ll hear a song that we said, ‘We’ll never, ever play this.’ And that’s right, ‘Stairway to Heaven,’” Bono explained.

Hear Bono and Edge’s take on “Stairway to Heaven” below.

Despite not being able to play live shows and go on tours due to the COVID-19 pandemic, U2 has kept themselves pretty busy in recent months. The bandmembers staged several virtual performances, while also reportedly working on new music.

The legendary rockers are also in the midst of launching their own SiriusXM channel U2 X-Radio. The channel will feature U2’s music but also an array of other content including interviews, special guest appearances, and shows hosted by Edge and Bono.

U2 released their first single in two years with Oscar and Grammy-winning Indian musician AR Rahman, just before the band’s first-ever visit to India next month on their Joshua Tree Tour 2019.

Rahman is best known for his work on the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack and the song “Jai Ho.”

The song’s announcement states that “Ahisma,” which is Sanskrit for non-violence, “celebrates the spiritual diversity of India and connects the ethos of U2 with the mastery of A.R. Rahman.”

Rahman said: “Ahimsa requires courage and strength. A quality that is impervious to weapons or power. It’s a mission which is most needed to heal the modern world and it is incredible timing to collaborate with U2, with their amazing legacy, to revive this movement.”

Variety also reported that the band will release “highlights from U2’s extensive catalog of songs,” which will be remixed by local Indian artists.

The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 began on November 5 and it will conclude in Mumbai.

In a recent interview Bono had with Billboard he was asked why, despite years of speculations, U2 has never actually played in India. The singer’s answer left little room for doubt that it was not for lack of motivation on U2’s part.

“The band kept wanting to go to India,” Bono asserted, “but ended up pushing it off time and time again. We kept thinking, ‘well, the next tour we’ll figure it out,’ and ‘the next tour we’ll figure it out,’ and we didn’t. It’s taken us this long.”

According to Bono, the main reason why U2 has never performed in India is technical: India is huge, and in parts, inaccessible. US’s gear is also huge, and lugging it around poses many difficulties. Ideas to perform in a more stripped-down matter were considered but ultimately shut down.

“We could’ve come to India many years ago with a stripped-down show, but we felt that if we are going to go, we want India to see us as we are everywhere else,” explained Bono.

“At one point we were talking about doing an acoustic show at the Taj Mahal,” he added longingly. “That would be a dream. Just the shapes and the meditation on love that it is; we feel our music is that meditation on love.”

We can only hope for U2 fans in India that this love will eventually find a way to bypass the difficulties preventing the band from coming over.

Metal and Hard rock fans may continue to argue which band is the biggest Metal band of all time but you can’t argue with the numbers and a recent report is putting this question to rest. Pollstar has released a report based on ticket sales and financial earnings from since 1982 and there is no doubt: Metallica takes the crown.

Since 1982, Metallica has sold close to 22.1 million tickets, which rolled in approximately 1.4 billion dollars. Trailing behind them are Guns N’ Roses with 800 million dollars in ticket sells – most of them from Not in This Lifetime reunion tours. Another band on the list are AC/DC with 14 million tickets sold and Ozzy Osbourne who with his Black Sabbath sales reached 13.2 million tickets.

According to Pollstar, though Metallica may not be the biggest touring band in the world (a title still held by U2), if you factor in their merchandise and album sells and their international reach they may be the biggest musical group in the world.

Drummer Lars Ulrich sums it up “I keep thinking and forcing myself to think all our best years are still ahead of us. We may even turn professional and do this full time one day.”

U2 had to call a gig off early due to Bono walking off stage.

The band’s live show at Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena was terminated after only a few song after Bono suffered a “complete loss of voice”. He stepped off the stage after complaining about smoke in the crowd and never returned.

“This is like being in a giant cigar,” he said to the crowd, which included a smoking area. “I’ve lost my voice and I don’t know what to do. I was singing like a bird about 10 minutes ago.”

Fans were naturally devastated that they didn’t get to watch the whole show but most seemed sympathetic, commenting on how he sang his heart out prior to losing his voice.

The band released a statement on their website apologizing to fans: “We’re so sorry for tonight’s cancellation,” it said. “Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice.

“We don’t know what has happened and we’re taking medical advice. As always, we appreciate our audience’s understanding and all our fans’ support in Berlin and those who travelled from afar. We will update you very soon.”

U2’s ‘Experience + Innocence Tour’ will continue from September 4.
