Eminem talks about his legendary record The Marshall Mathers LP and explains why fans say they “miss the old Eminem.”

Speaking with Sway Calloway in a virtual reality interview, the rapper admitted that he often finds himself chasing his 35-million-sold record The Marshall Mathers. He describes the place the record came from and then admits he cannot replicate that place now.

“Ima keep it 100% honest: I feel like, and I’ve felt like this for a long time – I’ve always been chasing ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’,” Eminem admitted. “Because I know that captured a moment, you know what I’m saying? It’s kind of like a time capsule, when I look back at it. The times that it was back then and the turmoil in my life that was happening.

“S**t was happening so fast and spiralling out of control. I had a lot of rage,” he continued. “When people say they miss the old Eminem, I feel like it’s probably that. You miss the rage. I don’t have the rage anymore that I used to have but I still have the exact same passion. Sometimes it doesn’t always come out the right way, and it’s like: ‘What the f**k is that? Take a pause, man.’

He added: “I don’t know who I’m competing with, but I just wanna be… there’s a lot of great rappers and artists coming up in this generation now. And I’m watching it, and I’m loving it, and the competitive spirit in me wants to keep up with the best of the best.”

It is still hard to imagine that 2000 was 18 years ago. This year was a big deal since it not only marked the entry into the new millennium but was also full of important events in politics, technology, and music. Zack de la Rocha left the Rage Against the Machine, Metallica filed a lawsuit against Napster while Coldplay had their debut release.

This is why we decided to remember some of the great records from 2000 that became 18-year-olds this year. Some of them are still getting a decent amount of recognition today, while others are maybe unfairly forgotten. Let’s check them out.

Limp Bizkit – Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water

You either think that Limp Bizkit’s third studio album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water is either terrible or great. There is no in-between. While the critics didn’t look at this release in the most favorable way, the record ended up topping the US Billboard 200 charts and contains some of the band’s biggest hits like “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)” and “Take a Look Around.”

Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory

Yes, 18 years have passed since Linking Park released their acclaimed debut album. Hybrid Theory came out of nowhere and conquered the music world overnight with the band’s nu-metal sound bringing some fresh air to the stale music scene. The record still stands as the bestselling rock album of the 21st century.

OutKast – Stankonia

Hardly anyone was ready for Stankonia, OutKast’s fourth studio album. The duo of André 3000 and Big Boi created a lyrically perfect album which revolved around themes of politics, love, parenthood and much more while featuring numerous influences including funk, rave, gospel, and rock. The album received universal acclaim following its release and is now considered as one of the best hip-hop records of all time.

Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP

Follow up to Eminem’s breakout record The Slim Shady LP, this album showed that the rappers earlier success wasn’t an accident. The Marshall Mathers LP won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and became the fastest selling LP by any solo music artist in the United States. Now old enough to drink alcohol in Europe, it is still one of Eminem’s brightest moments.

Radiohead – Kid A

While Radiohead divided both the critics and the audience with this experimental album in 2000, Kid A went to achieve critical acclaim in later years. Some magazines and publications, like Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and the Times, even went so far to call it the greatest album of the decade. Tom York and the gang close to their finest.
