]]>Back in 2022, the band revealed plans to release a new studio album, a follow-up to 2021’s Pressure Machine. The project was scheduled to arrive at some point in 2023 and would see the band depart from their signature style and venture into synth-influenced sound.
However, The Killers only shared the album’s lead single, “Your Side of the Town,” which came out in August, before deciding to abandon the plans for the record. Now, Flowers decided to share more about that decision.
“It just didn’t feel authentic. It felt like we were forcing something,” Flowers told The Sun. “We love synth music, it’s a part of our DNA and there’s been great contributions from us in that genre. And man, we love New Order and Depeche Mode, so it’s not a slight. It just doesn’t feel right for us at the moment.”
Instead, The Killers opted to release a greatest hits album titled Rebel Diamonds. The release, which arrived on December 8, also contains “Your Side of Town” as well as previously unreleased singles “Boy” and “Spirit.”

]]>As part of the announcement, the group unveiled the cover art for the album alongside a short teaser trailer. The release will be available in several formats, including digital release, CD, and vinyl.
According to the official press release, The Killers started working on Pressure Machine shortly after releasing Imploding the Mirage. Being unable to embark on a tour to promote the record, the group used their free time to create new songs.
Frontman Brandon Flowers also revealed that the album was inspired by his hometown of Nephi, Utah and might be the band’s most personal offering to date.
“I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” Flowers shared. “Many memories of my time in Nephi are tender. But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully, I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”
Pressure Machine will also mark the return of founding guitarist Dave Keuning. He left the band in 2017 and wasn’t involved in the making of Imploding the Mirage. Keuning is expected to be involved with the group in full capacity moving forward.

]]>As part of the release, the group also announced that the new album will be out on May 29th.
You can hear “Caution,” which features a contribution from former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, below.
“Caution” had its debut on the latest edition of Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, which featured The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers as a guest. Flowers used the opportunity to give listeners some background bits about the track.
“It’s sort of about having the wherewithal to listen to that angel on your shoulder, even if they’re telling you something that you don’t want to hear,” explained Flowers. “And I think for me with this song was a lot about leaving Las Vegas. I was having this sort of hunch or impression that that was something that I was supposed to do for my family. And it was hard for me because I’m an ambassador for — and so it was tough for me to leave, and I thought I was able to harness that energy, and there was a sort of a relief when it happened, and you kind of feel that the spirit in “Caution.”
Flowers also acknowledged that the band’s previous studio effort Wonderful Wonderful featured some experimentation, so “Caution” represented a chance for them to get back to their roots.

It is unclear when the new album will be released but fans are hopeful that it will arrive later this year.
Earlier this month, Flowers gave NME an update on the new music He revealed: “We’ve been in Utah doing it. That’s where I fell in love with music for the first time; so it’s interesting to be there again and hear some of that music with the geography matching the sensation. Some of that stuff is starting to resurface and a lot of that had to do with synthesizer music. It’s always been part of our DNA but it’s definitely creeping up.”
More details to be shared when they arrive.
