]]>The show in question was at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Saturday (Oct 12). According to the band’s announcement, Gallup had to return to the UK due to a personal situation.
“Another serious personal situation affecting our bassist Simon arose yesterday, and as a consequence, he had to return to the UK,” the band announced on its twitter page. “We would like to thank Eden Gallup for filling in on bass again at such short notice.”
As you can tell from the use of the word “another”, this wasn’t the first time in recent history that The Cure was on stage without their regular bassist. Back in July Gallup could not accompany the band to Japan to perform at Fuji Rock Festival. He was replaced by son Eden then as well, who played a total of seven shows before his father could resume his place in the line-up.

]]>Speaking with Zocalo, Smith revealed that he has “prepared” three new albums with The Cure, with the first one having a working title Live From the Moon.
“Actually I have prepared three albums, two of them more advanced. The first will be the one that we will release very soon. I think that the first single, or the whole album, will come out this Christmas, or a little earlier. It has the title of ‘Live From the Moon’ and it will surely change its name” – Smith revealed.
According to Smith, the second album will feature “freer pieces and with a more pronounced, stronger sound,” while the third one is described as “a noise disc, with different aspects and environments, all based on experiences on a stage.”
The Cure was quite active this year, embarking on a tour that saw them playing mostly festival dates across Europe, U.S., Asia, and Australia. This was part of the band’s celebration efforts for their 40th anniversary. The band also released a documentary this year, which chronicles their experience during the tour.

Speaking with NME, Robert Smith explained that the creation of the film has been an opportunity to explain The Cure from his own perspective. When asked about myths about the band that he wants to dispel, he said: “I think that would be impossible! They’re too deeply ingrained.
“There are so many misconceptions about the band. They’re misconceptions from my point of view, and I suppose that’s what I’m getting at. When we do it, it will be The Cure from my perspective. It will be what I think the band has been, what we’ve done, what my role has been in it, how I’ve done it and why I’ve done it.”

The band’s longtime visual collaborator Tim Pope shared a photo of the film earlier this year but other than that, we haven’t really heard much regarding the film’s release.
Now, the band has confirmed that the film will be hitting cinemas on July 11.
“This really was the perfect way to celebrate 40 years of the band,” said Robert Smith. “It was a fabulous day none of us will ever forget”.
Pope added: “Working alongside Robert for these 37 years of the band’s 40-year history – and also having previously filmed the band for the 35mm ‘In Orange’ 1986 concert film – I wanted cinema-goers to feel like they were in the thick of the action, in the heart of the music. Our film really captures the true power and passion of The Cure’s music for a global audience.”

]]>One of our favorite parts is its amazing soundtrack, and director Jonathan Levine recently revealed how he put it together.
Music always played a huge role in his filmmaking process, and he took the same approach with this love story about a potential presidential candidate and her newly appointed speechwriter, played by Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen.
Levine shared his process in an interview with Slash Film, and explained he put together a playlist of songs he wanted to use, that served as a great source of inspiration.
“I was really going for this Cameron Crowe thing. Music is how you see the world. Music is the way you mark relationships. Music is what you remember about falling in love or breaking up. Music is the thing you share with someone when you want to get closer to them,” revealed Levine.
One of the most epic moments of the whole movie was surprise cameo by Boyz II Men. They gave the movie a ’90s flavor, and the love story between main characters probably wouldn’t even happen if it wasn’t for their music.
“They were the first call we made, and we we’re so excited they said yes, because from a character perspective, there’s so much of thinking about the young idealist and whether the young version of you would be happy with where you are today,” said Levine.

]]>It’s not uncommon among bands to sell tickets for their “last ever tour” only to make a comeback a couple of years later when they get bored of retirement or need some extra cash. The kings of this stunt are The Cure, who have promised time and time again that their latest album will be their last. Now though, it seems they really mean it.
Speaking with SiriusXM, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell confessed their upcoming album likely will be their last and that it will be their “saddest” and “most dramatic” record yet.
“It’s epic, I can say that about it. I mean, playing it and sitting there and listening back to it… everybody’s jaws were dropping. I said to Robert a couple of years ago, ‘We have to make one more record, and it has to be the saddest record that’s ever been made and the most dramatic’. And I think it will be.”
Earlier in the interview, O’Donnell shared that he believes this will be the band’s last record.
“I personally think it will be the last Cure record,” he said.. “I know it’s been said a million times before, but at this stage in our lives…”

]]>But since the majority of the fans won’t be able to come to Australia for this celebratory gigs, the band decided to bring the celebration to them.
The Cure announced that they added a fifth show that will take place in front of Sydney Opera House on May 30th, and that the entire thing will be live streamed on May 30th via Facebook and YouTube. According to NME, the performance will be directed by British filmmaker and frequent collaborator of the band, Nick Wickham.
“We look forward to celebrating the anniversary of this special album with you all… …and remember: this album was mixed to be played loud… so turn it up!” – said The Cure in a statement.
Released on May 2, 1989, Disintegration was The Cure’s attempt to get back to their origins of gothic rock. It became their first major commercial success and is still the band’s highest selling record to date with more than three million copies sold worldwide.
Critics gave Disintegration mixed review at first, but the album later met with critical acclaim and found its place on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. It contains some of The Cure’s most popular songs including “Lovesong,” “Pictures Of You,” and “Lullaby.”

“So for the first time in 20 years, we went into a studio — we actually went into the studio where they did “Bohemian Rhapsody,” funnily enough,” Smith told Rolling Stone. “It’s a great studio in the middle of nowhere. We just played music for three weeks. And it’s great. I know everyone says that. But it really is f***ing great.”
The goth legend continued: “It’s so dark. It’s incredibly intense. And I’ve waited 10 years to do something that means something. It’s going to work really well. I’m not sure how much of it we’ll play this summer at festivals. It’s not really festival music. The songs are like 10 minutes, 12 minutes long.
“We recorded 19 songs. So I have no idea what to do now. The others are saying, “Triple album!” I’m saying, no let’s not. I’ll pick six or maybe eight songs and do like a single album. But I think it will delight our hardcore fans. And probably really, really infuriate everyone else.”
He added: “At my age, I’m still doom and gloom.”
