Motörhead may have disbanded three years ago after the death of its main driving force Lemmy, but guitarist Phil Campbell hasn’t stopped performing. In fact, he is going to put forward his first-ever solo album soon, the aptly-named Old Lions Still Roar.

Campbell has gathered an impressive pack of old lions to collaborate with for the album, including Alice Cooper, Mick Mars (Mötley Crüe), guitar legend Joe Satriani, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest).

“I couldn’t believe the incredible players that spent some time on the record for me,” Campbell said to Andrew McKaysmith on his podcast, Scars and Guitars. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world in that respect. Mega talent all the way through it, helping me out when I needed help. I’ve got no complaints whatsoever.”

On the making of the album, Campbell said: “I wouldn’t say [it was] 20 years in the making, but 20 years I’ve been yearning to do a solo album. Since Motörhead, sadly, finished, I’ve had more time to think about [it] and to knuckle down and everything. I probably started the first recording of it about two and a half, three years ago.”

The songs we’ve heard from the upcoming release all sound great and distinctly different from the established Motörhead formula. “I just didn’t want to do an album sounding like Motörhead,” Campbell explained. “I’ve done 20-odd albums like that.”

There isn’t much Rob Halford hasn’t done yet. The 68-year-old “Metal God,” as fans have dubbed him, has been on stages just about everywhere and with just about everyone. But as it turns out, there is one thing the legendary frontman of Judas Priest cannot yet boast that he has performed.

Halford was speaking on the Full Metal Jackie show about his upcoming album Celestial when the matter of this unmet challenge arose: “There’s a beautiful song on this album called “Morning Star,” and I kind of put that song together pretty quickly,” he explained. “I was in the kitchen of my house playing acoustic guitar and this song just started to happen. And as I was playing it, I could hear Willie Nelson in the background singing along with me.”

Halford was quick to come to terms with his serendipity: “I thought, ‘How cool would this be, for The Metal God and Willie Nelson to do kind of a duet?’ And he’s like a God, right? Willie Nelson is a God. And as luck would have it, Willie is on the same label as I am — Sony/Legacy. So we’re trying to see if that could be a possibility.”

Both Halford and Nelson first rose to prominence in the ‘70s, and Halford demonstrated genuine respect to the country music icon. “I love what he does with his music; I love what he does for America; I love the way he supports the farmers and the very important people that put the food on our tables here,” Halford expanded on his admiration of Nelson. “So that would be great if that could happen.”

We sincerely hope that these two titans of their respective genres find a way to make this duet take place!

In honor of Pride month, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford has opened up about his experience coming out as gay in a compelling interview with Edmonton Journal.

In the interview, Halford was asked whether he was worried that coming out as gay in the 90s would cause him to lose fans. Although the majority of his fans claimed they had known for over a decade, Halford has admitted that coming out was a real struggle.

“I was surrounded by homophobia, which still exists today,” Halford explained. “There are places I can’t go back to because I’ll be stoned to death. As far as that whole business, I discovered when I did come out that I was in this trap gay people find themselves living in that you’re living your life for everyone else, but not yourself. During the ’70s and ’80s it was incredibly difficult.”

He continued: “I love Priest more than anything, so while always in my mind — I have to be careful how I say this — it’s not important to the music. Though I will say, a straight man can’t do my job [laughs]. That’s the way I view it.

“Freddie [Mercury] said it wasn’t important, but if Freddie hadn’t have been gay, Queen would’ve been a totally different band. But that’s a really important part of my life that I have to get down on paper at some point.”

Judas Priest are on tour now.
