The Songwriters Hall of Fame will welcome some big names as part of its 2024 class of inductees. The list includes several performing and non-performing songwriters like the members of the legendary rock band R.E.M., Grammy Award winner Hillary Lindsey, and acclaimed record producer Timbaland.

R.E.M., Lindsey, and Timbaland will be joined by Dean Pitchford and Steely Dan founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. The induction ceremony will take place at New York City’s Marriott Marquis Hotel on June 13.

“I’ve said it before, but the music industry does not exist without songwriters delivering great songs first. Without them there is no recorded music, no concert business, no merch . . . nothing, it all starts with the song and the songwriter,” said Songwriters Hall Of Fame chairman Nile Rodgers while announcing the 2024 class.

R.E.M., consisting of Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills & Michael Stipe, is considered one of the most influential groups of all time. Their catalog includes hits like “Losing My Religion,”  “Everybody Hurts,” and “Radio Free Europe.”

Lindsey wrote songs for artists from multiple genres and music styles, including Faith Hill, Shakira, Carrie Underwood, Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. Her notable works include Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” for which Lindsey received Grammy Awards in the Best Country Song category.

Timbaland worked with some of the most notable music artists in recent decades, including Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Alicia Keys. His credits include Timberlake’s “SexyBack,” Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On,” and his own hit single “The Way I Are.”

Dean Pitchford is known for contributing songs to musicals, animated films, and movies alongside writing for musicians. His works include Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” from Footloose and Whitney Houston’s “All The Man That I Need.”

Finally, Steely Dan is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band that has been active since 1971. Some of their biggest hits include “Reelin’ in the Years,” “My Old School,” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”

Michael Stipe is back with his first-ever solo single!

Stipe, who was the frontman of indie rock pioneers R.E.M., took an extended hiatus from music after he left his former band about eight years ago. It was only a few years ago that rumors started flying that he was starting to gather materials for an eventual solo album. Although Stipe has been musically active with R.E.M. since 1980, this would mark the first time in his career that he is creating music by himself.

The song is called “Your Capricious Soul,” and according to Stripe it was inspired by the environmental social movement know as Extinction Rebellion.

“I took a long break from music, and I wanted to jump back in,” Stipe said in a press release. “I love ‘Your Capricious Soul’ — it’s my first solo work. I want to add my voice to this exciting shift in consciousness.”

Regarding the earlier-than-expected timing of the single, Stiple explained: “Extinction Rebellion gave me the incentive to push the release and not wait. Our relationship to the environment has been a lifelong concern, and I now feel hopeful—optimistic, even. I believe we can bring the kind of change needed to improve our beautiful planet earth, our standing and our place on it.”

R.E.M. decided to dig deep into their collection of unheard material recently, and presented their fans with previously unreleased song “Fascinating.” The song is available for purchase on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Mercy Corps and their hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas.

Fascinating by R.E.M.

According to the press release, “Fascinating” was originally intended for the band’s 2001’s album Reveal, but didn’t make the cut. Three years later, R.E.M. returned to the track once again and re-recorded it during the Around the Sun sessions. Interestingly, the recording took place at Compass Point Studios, in Nassau, Bahamas.

Once again, however, the song didn’t find its place on the tracklist. This time, the reason was that it didn’t fit the overall theme of the album. The group kept it locked in their vault after that but decided Mercy Corps’ noble cause was a good reason to share it with the rest of the world world.

“I’m glad the song is now available,” R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills told Rolling Stone. “But I’m heartsick it’s for this particular situation.”

You can check out the frontman Michael Stipe’s message following the release of “Fascinating” below.

R.E.M. is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their ninth studio album Monster with a special box set reissue. The collection, set to drop on November 1st, will feature a remastered version of the record as well as unreleased demos, live recordings and a new remix from the original producer Scott Litt.

The box set will also contain all of the music videos for the album’s songs as well as 1996’s concert film Road Movie.

In case you don’t want the whole package, the reissue will also be available as a 2-CD, 2-LP and as a standalone 180-gram 1-LP.

As part of the announcement, R.E.M. also shared a remixed version of album’s first single “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”

Released on September 1994, Monster followed the commercial success of R.E.M.’s previous two albums and topped US Billboard 200 and charts in several other countries. While the album was met with generally positive reviews as well, it was considered to be a bit of a letdown compared to group’s previous works.

Monster saw the band experiment with their music and adopting a new, heavier sound, which didn’t sit well with a part of their fan group. It is also considered one of the reasons why R.E.M.’s popularity began fading away in the second part of the ’90s.
