]]>The post Was Normani’s Debut Album “Dopamine” Worth the Wait? appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>It was clear that Normani was destined for R&B greatness when she dropped her breakout hit “Motivation” in 2019. It felt like a perfect launchpad for her debut album, but the record her fans were expecting never came and her fans spent the next five years waiting for what she’s promised.
Dopamine is finally here, with no “Motivation” in sight, after Normani decided to scrap it in pursuit of a new sound. It kicks off with a groovy, rap-influenced “Bad Boy” and gives us 13 tracks that allow Normani to reintroduce herself and show us what she’s been working on for such a long time.
Dopamine kicks off rather slow, and the songs from the first half of the album pretty much blend together and they’re not catchy enough to be memorable. Normani shows a lot of promise with “All Yours” and “Take My Time”, true love letters to the classic R&B sound that inspired this album.
She finally picks up the pace with “Insomnia” and “Canty Paint” and things get much better from there. The second half also gives us several A-list collaborations, including “1:59” ft. Gunna, “Tantrums” ft. James Blake, and “Wild Side” ft. Cardi B, which dates all the way back to 2021 and serves as a reminder of what Normani was capable of long before Dopamine.
She previously described her debut album as a representation of her evolution and “everything [she had] gone through to get to this moment”, but Dopamine feels too impersonal to live up to these words. Despite being Normani’s first foray into solo music, it feels more like a homage to her idols than a personal statement, but it’s still a pretty good R&B record that makes us excited to see her growth.

]]>The rising country star Shaboozey created a lot of buzz for his new album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going with his breakout hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”. This isn’t the only amazing new song on his new LP, and “My Fault” ft. Noah Cyrus is also worth the listen.
Several more artists dropped new albums this week, giving us amazing new songs along the way. The Marías made the cut with “Echo” from Submarine, while Ayra Starr impressed us with “Last Heartbreak Song” ft. Giveon from The Year I Turned 21.
The rest of our list mostly consists of artists teasing their upcoming albums with new singles. Kehlani gave us a taste of Crash with “Next 2 U”, Normani shared another dose of Dopamine with “Candy Paint”, while Snow Patrol announced a new album The Forest Is the Path and teased their new sound with “The Beginning”.
Check out the rest of our list and discover new songs by Foster the People, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Disclosure, and Roddy Ricch.

]]>The former Fifth Harmony singer has been working on her debut album since going solo in 2018, and she finally announced it back in February. She shared the album’s title and cover at the time, and her fans have been pushing her to give us more ever since.
She finally answered their prayers this Friday, when the lead single “1:59” ft. Gunna hit the shelves. She also announced that Dopamine would be released on June 14 via RCA Records.
Normani discussed the release of her debut album with Elle and revealed she went through several different titles, including Butterfly Effect and 1906, which was the address of her grandmother’s house where she was raised.
“Dopamine represents the highs and the lows I’ve endured. It’s been such an emotional roller coaster… I really wanted to have a title that felt like it definitely encompassed everything that I feel I’ve been through in my journey to get to the point that I’m in right now,” she explained.

]]>The wait for Normani’s debut album has been so long that it became somewhat of an inside joke with her fans. A month after announcing Dopamine’s title and cover, Normani didn’t share any additional information about its release, and her fans decided to react.
X user @knotBoots sent her a message reading, “Good morning Normani, Just wanted to follow up on this album announcement as I have not heard anything back as of yet.” Surprisingly enough, Normani decided to hit back, writing, “Hi, Thank you for your patience. This matter will be addressed tomorrow at 1:59 pm EST. – Management.”
A day later, Normani stayed true to her word, announcing that the first single from Dopamine, titled “1:59” will be released on April 26. The album itself still doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected to hit the shelves later this year.
Normani’s debut solo album has been in the making ever since Fifth Harmony disbanded in 2018, and the singer previously described it as a representation of her evolution.

Normani announced her solo album will be titled Dopamine, and it will be released by RCA later this year. She also shared the album cover, which shows her riding a black rocket ship against a white background.
This visual is quite a departure from the aesthetic she embraced in the music video for “Motivation”, but she previously told W Magazine this single won’t be representative of the whole album.
“I’m not always as bubblegum as ‘Motivation’ was, or as bubblegum as how people have perceived me to be from looking at that music video. So just imagine the flip side of that. It’s still going to be palatable for a wide audience. Nobody is going to feel left out,” said Normani at the time.
