It seems like thrash legends Metallica are taking a laid back approach when it comes to their future. According to the band’s frontman James Hetfield, the group doesn’t have long term plans and are unsure about “what’s gonna happen next.”

Hetfield recently made an appearance at Petersen Automotive Museum in LA, where he hosted an exhibition called Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection. During the Q&A part of the exhibition, the vocalist/guitarist was asked whether Metallica has plans to release a new record.

“That’s a great question. We don’t know,” Hetfield responded. “Right now, I’m sitting in Petersen Museum, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen next. That’s the beauty of this.”

Metallica is currently on its worldwide tour which will see the band play at several major festivals in the United States as well as a handful of dates in South America. The group is expected to decide on their future after that, according to Hetfield.

“We’ll sit down and figure out what works best for us,” he added. “Whatever is coming up, we don’t know. And we kind of thrive off of the fear of the unknown — a bit — and being scared just enough to feel alive.”

Metallica’s last studio release came in 2016 when they released Hardwired… to Self-Destruct. The record was received with positive reviews and was a commercial success, topping charts in 30 countries.

Metallica will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their ‘S&M’ album with a special show where they will reunite with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

“Please join us for this one-night-only show as we celebrate the addition of what is sure to become a cultural landmark in the Bay Area,” the band shared in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be invited to be a part of it and humbled to be sharing the stage with the legendary MTT and the city’s finest musicians in the San Francisco Symphony.”

S&M was released in 2009 and was composed by Michael Kamen. The record features the smash hit ‘No Leaf Clover’ and achieved 5x platinum status. Kamen composed the album as a tribute to the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton who died in the 1986 tour bus accident. Burton had a loved of classical music and this love inspired the recruitment of San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

Retirement has become a popular trend in the music these days, with Slayer, Kiss, Paul Simon, Elton John, and many others announcing their farewell tours in 2018. Unlike them, thrash metal legend Metallica are not even considering something like this. On the contrary, the band is looking to be around for another 20 to 25 years according to their drummer Lars Ulrich.

During his recent interview with 93.3 WMMR Rocks, Ulrich was asked to give his opinion on farewell tours and whether Metallica will do the same in the future.

“A lot of people are retiring, and we feel very energized and rejuvenated. I mean, we wanna go [a] long [time]. We hope we can get another 20, 25 years,” – said Ulrich. “I don’t know what it’s gonna look like, I don’t know what it’s gonna sound like, but that’s in our heads. So we’re not sitting there thinking retirement or this or that; we’re sort of more the opposite. So I would say, for us, everything we do is kind of a long game. And back then, when you were 17, you only think of, like, the next five minutes. ‘Where is the next beer? Whoo!’ So that’s kind of different mentality nowadays.”

The 54-year-old went on to explain that their fans are getting younger, and that “half the audience is under 20” at their shows, which helps their longevity and has them looking forward to new shows.

Metallica is currently touring the world in support of their 2016’s album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct and will start the second leg of North America dates on November 3rd with a show in San Francisco. The band will tour the U.S. until March 2019.
