Heavy metal legends Megadeth will have some new music to show for next year. According to the group’s bassist David Ellefson, this might even include releasing the follow up to their most recent studio effort, 2016’s Dystopia.

Ellefson revealed this during an appearance on the Decibel Geek podcast in which he discussed the band’s plans for the future and prospects of Megadeth fans hearing a new song in 2021.

“Basic tracks are done. Overdubs now are continuing,” said Ellefson. “I’m sure 2021 will see some new Megadeth music of some form—hopefully, the whole album.”

Ellefson also added that the group remains hopeful of resuming their touring plans next year.

“Touring will open up, and we can drop a record, and the tour dates that we have rescheduled will all go forward as planned. That’s what we’re hoping,” he explained.

Megadeth was scheduled to tour North America with Lamb of God in 2020, but the bands had to postpone the shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new dates are currently set for the second part of 2021.

Back in June, Megadeth’s frontman Dave Mustaine told SiriusXM that the band already has 18 songs lined up for the new record. Mustaine said at the time that the album will be comprised out of 16 original tracks and two covers while adding that the release could end up being “in the top four” of their best studio efforts.

Dave Mustaine and Megadeth are back on the road. After taking a break following a throat cancer diagnosis, Mustaine returned to stage with his band at Hartwell Arena in Helsinki, Finland on Monday night.

Megadeth played their first live show in 15 months, performing as an opening act for Five Finger Death Punch. The thrash metal legends delivered a set that comprised out of 11 songs and encore, including some of the fan favorites like” A Tout Le Monde,” “Symphony of Destruction,” and “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.”

Check out some of the fan-made footage from the show below.

Megadeth will continue supporting Five Finger Death Punch through January and February on shows across Europe. The tour is scheduled to wrap up on February 20th in Budapest, Hungary.

Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer back in July, after which he decided to take a break from music. Luckily, the vocalist/guitarist successfully underwent treatment and is reportedly on the road to making a full recovery.

Before the diagnosis, Megadeth was in the studio, working on the follow-up to 2016’s Dystopia.

Megadeth has confirmed they are back in the studio for album number 16.

It has been three years since the release of 2016’s Dystopia. Now, the metal band is back in the recording studio working on a follow-up. The band shared a photo of them in the studio on social media with the caption “It begins #megadeth16.”

Earlier this year, Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine told Music Radar that the album comprises of 13 or 14 songs rather than the contracted 8.

“My contract says I’m only supposed to do eight songs a record and I just can’t do that – it feels like cheating,” he revealed.

“When I grew up listening to vinyl, it was a lot easier to buy a record and be happy with 45 minutes of music. When the digital world came, the paradigm changed – a musical offering needs a lot more. People aren’t satisfied and hit fast-forward a lot. So right now, we know we’re off to a good start. This new material is only going to get better and better.”

The upcoming album has no scheduled released date but fans should anticipate a 2020 release.
