The reunion of ex-Metallica members won’t take place at Megadeth after all. Jason Newsted recently confirmed he’s not joining Dave Mustaine-fronted group despite multiple reports claiming that he will step in after the band sacked their bassists David Ellefson.

Newsted denied the rumors via an Instagram post made by his wife Nicole. “Jason is not joining Megadeth. Peace to them. Listen to metal,” Newsted wrote before explaining that her husband “does not have social media accounts.”

The news will most likely be a great disappointment for thrash metal fans, who were already excited about things that a Newsted-Mustaine team-up would offer. The possibilities were already hinted at back in 2013, when Newsted joined Megadeth on stage for a rendition of “Phantom Lord.”

Jason Newsted became Metallica’s bassist in 1986, replacing the late Cliff Burton. He recorded albums …And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, and Reload with the band before deciding to quit in 2001. Newsted wanted for the band to take a year-long hiatus at the time, so he could focus on his side projects, but his proposal was rejected. He would later work with bands Echobrain and Voivod while also touring with Ozzy Osbourne.

Dave Mustaine was Metallica’s lead guitarist between 1981 and 1983. He is credited with co-writing six of the band’s early songs but was kicked out of the band before the group recorded their debut album. Mustaine formed Megadeth shortly after.

Heavy metal legends Megadeth will have some new music to show for next year. According to the group’s bassist David Ellefson, this might even include releasing the follow up to their most recent studio effort, 2016’s Dystopia.

Ellefson revealed this during an appearance on the Decibel Geek podcast in which he discussed the band’s plans for the future and prospects of Megadeth fans hearing a new song in 2021.

“Basic tracks are done. Overdubs now are continuing,” said Ellefson. “I’m sure 2021 will see some new Megadeth music of some form—hopefully, the whole album.”

Ellefson also added that the group remains hopeful of resuming their touring plans next year.

“Touring will open up, and we can drop a record, and the tour dates that we have rescheduled will all go forward as planned. That’s what we’re hoping,” he explained.

Megadeth was scheduled to tour North America with Lamb of God in 2020, but the bands had to postpone the shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new dates are currently set for the second part of 2021.

Back in June, Megadeth’s frontman Dave Mustaine told SiriusXM that the band already has 18 songs lined up for the new record. Mustaine said at the time that the album will be comprised out of 16 original tracks and two covers while adding that the release could end up being “in the top four” of their best studio efforts.
