“What Was I Made For?” from Barbie entered this year’s Oscars as the top contender for the best original song award, and it lived up to the hype! Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won their second Academy Award for this song, but Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” ended up stealing the show.

“What Was I Made For?” defeated Barbie’s I’m Just Ken”, written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, “The Fire Inside” by Diane Warren from Flamin’ Hot, “It Never Went Away” by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson from American Symphony, and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Scott George from Killers of the Flower Moon to win Eilish and O’Connel their second Oscar.

They previously collected the best original song trophy for the James Bond theme song from “No Time to Die”. “What Was I Made For?” already won multiple awards coming into the Oscars on Sunday night, including a Grammy for the best song written for visual media.

Despite losing the best original song Oscar to “What Was I Made For?”, “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie was one of the highlights of this year’s ceremony. Ryan Gosling delivered an electrifying performance, which paid homage to Marilyn Monroe’s film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and brought the Oscars crowd to its feet alongside Mark Ronson, Slash, and his co-stars Scott Evans, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben Adir, and Ncuti Gatwa.

It’s somewhat of an Oscar tradition to have all the best original song nominees performed at the ceremony, and the Academy will be honoring it this year. Billie Eilish, Becky G, and Ryan Gosling will bring the nominated songs to LA’s Dolby Theatre in less than two weeks.

Eilish is the front-runner to win the best original song with “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie, and she’ll deliver another rendition of this moving ballad at the Oscars ceremony. She previously won a Grammy and a Golden Globe for co-writing this song with her brother and frequent collaborator Finneas O’Connell.

“I’m Just Ken” from Barbie is also a strong contender for this award, and we’ll get to hear it live during the Oscars. Ryan Gosling, who performed this viral hit in the original film, will bring the Kenergy to the Academy Awards alongside Mark Ronson.

Becky G will take the stage to perform Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, while Jon Batiste will deliver a rendition of “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony. They’ll be joined by Scott George and the Osage Singers, performing “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon.

The 2024 Academy Awards will return to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 10, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the show.

After months of anticipation, the Academy Awards nominations are finally in, and some of our favorite artists made it to the best original song field. Songs from Barbie: The Album are leading the way, with “I’m Just Ken”, and “What Was I Made For?” both making the cut.

“What Was I Made For?”, written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, is one of the main contenders for this award, after winning the Golden Globe in the same category. This duo earned their second nod in the best original song field just two years after winning the Oscar for the James Bond theme song “No Time to Die”.

“What Was I Made For?” will have to face tough competition in the fellow Barbie tune “I’m Just Ken”, written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and performed by Ryan Gosling. Ronson and Wyatt are also former recipients of the best original song Oscar for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, which they co-wrote with Lady Gaga and Anthony Rossomando.

The list of nominees in this category will also include “The Fire Inside” by Diane Warren from Flamin’ Hot, “It Never Went Away” by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson from American Symphony, and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Osage Tribal Singers from Killers of the Flower Moon.

The winners will be announced on March 10, when the Academy Awards are set to return to LA’s Dolby Theatre, with Jimmy Kimmel serving as the host.

The race for the best original song race is heating up, and another front-runner emerged at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday night. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt collected the Critics’ Choice Awards for the viral hit “I’m Just Ken”, performed by Ryan Gosling in Barbie.

“I’m Just Ken” faced tough competition in the fellow Barbie songs “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa and “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish, plus “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, “Road to Freedom” from Rustin, “This Wish” from Wish. It eventually defeated them all, and its songwriters Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt were crowned as winners.

Ronson first thanked Gosling for making the audience fall in love with this song and said this award is as much his as theirs, before turning his attention to the director Greta Gerwig.

“The fact that you carved out 11 minutes for this prog-rock, power-ballad, dream-ballet, shred fest so the boys could cry and hold hands a little too, we’re really forever in your debt for that,” said Ronson in his acceptance speech.

“I’m Just Ken” has also been nominated for best song written for visual media at the Grammy Awards, in addition to being shortlisted for best original song at the Academy Awards.

The promo tour for Barbie was one wild rollercoaster and its soundtrack played a crucial part in putting the film on the map. Curated by superproducer Mark Ronson, Barbie: The Album brought together some of the world’s leading artists, but did he manage to live up to the hype?

You’ve most likely heard some of the soundtrack’s best songs long before Barbie hit the theatres. It was an important part of the film’s hype machine, and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night”, “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj & Ice Space, and Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” helped set the tone Greta Gerwig’s cinematic masterpiece.

These songs happen to be some of the album’s highlights, along with PinkPantheress’ “Angel” and Chari XCX’s “Speed Drive”, but that’s also part of the problem. Barbie: The Album doesn’t hide any surprises up its sleeve, and we’ve already got to hear most of it long before it came out due to the film’s aggressive promo.

Ronson obviously wanted to cast a wide net when curating this album, giving us a mix between bubblegum pop and indie rock, but this mix doesn’t always work. Kendom’s side of the soundtrack is its weakest link, with the exception of Sam Smith’s catchy “Man I Am”. Songs by Khalid, The Kid Laroi, and Dominic Fike feel like placeholders, both in terms of this soundtrack and their overall discography.

All these flaws don’t change the fact that Barbie: The Album is pretty delightful and features several catchy bops we’ll be listening to all summer long, including Ryan Gosling’s anthem “I’m Just Ken”. Some of them are even worthy candidates for the best original song at the Oscars, but you’ll need rose-colored glasses to enjoy this soundtrack to the fullest.

Dua Lipa gave us one of the defining pop albums of the 2020s with Future Nostalgia and set the bar high for whatever she decides to do next. Mark Ronson got to hear snippets of her third studio album while they worked together on the Barbie soundtrack and revealed it sounds “incredible”.

Ronson recently set down with Variety to discuss Barbie: The Album, which he produced. Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” was released as the soundtrack’s first single, and he explained that she was the right artist to record this song because it felt Future Nostalgia–adjacent, adding it has “an energy, but it’s kind of tough and weird”, like all the best disco songs.

The “Uptown Funk” artist also revealed that he got to hear some parts of Lipa’s upcoming third studio album while they were working together on Barbie.

“I’ve heard some of it and it’s incredible. I think that’s why there’s the disco ball that smashes in the video, right? This feels like her triumphant stomp on that era of her music into whatever she does next,” said Ronson.

Lipa mostly collaborated with other artists since the release of Future Nostalgia, including Elton John and Megan Thee Stallion, and “Dance the Night” is her first and only new release of 2023 so far.

Troye Sivan already found significant success with his single “Easy”, but he found a way to take it to new heights. He recorded a new version alongside Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson, and the music video for this song is quite a wild ride.

Bardia Zeinali was in charge of directing the retro visual, filmed on the streets of Nashville, Tennessee. Sivan and Musgraves take lead roles as a pair of runaways who spend most of the video dyeing their hair in motel bathrooms, going to drag shows, and driving old cars down the highway.

While discussing the music video with Vogue, Sivan described their characters as people who “separately had [their] own experiences … regrets, scorning [their] lovers … and find solace in each other.”

This marks the second collaboration between the pair, after the song “Glittery” from The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show.

Before Musgraves recorded a new verse, and Ronson added a “disco-pop heartbeat” to the track, “Easy” was released as one of the songs from Sivan’s EP In a Dream and it received a nomination for one ARIA Music Award.

Camila Cabello’s second album is still in the making, but that’s not stopping her from dropping one amazing song after another. Here’s how we rank all of her collaborations that came out this year (so far).

South of the Border

Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello, and Cardi B may seem like a match made in heaven, but this song is surprisingly forgettable and features a couple of pretty questionable lyrical choices.

Mi Persona Favorita

Alejandro Sanz is one of Cabello’s childhood idols. Working with him was a dream come true for the young singer – and it shows.

Find U Again

Despite the fact this isn’t our favorite song from Mark Ronson’s new album Late Night Feelings (Miley Cyrus collaboration “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” takes the top spot), it’s a close second and its relatable lyrics tug at our heartstrings every time.

Señorita

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello really brought the heat with this single, and they would’ve easily topped the charts around the world if it wasn’t for the never-ending domination of “Old Town Road”. Their second collaboration is still the song of the summer in our hearts.

It’s been a couple of weeks since Mark Ronson dropped his new album Late Night Feelings, and this record is a gift that keeps on giving. The British musician just shared new music video for his latest single “Find U Again”, featuring Camila Cabello.

The action-packed black and white video for this song sees Ronson playing one of the bounty hunters who are looking for Cabello. He’s the first one to reach “Club Heartbreak” where she works, and he immediately falls for her after seeing her perform an elaborate cabaret act. Instead of snatching her up, Ronson helps her escape the scene and the video ends with the couple riding off into the sunset.

Ronson worked with many pop stars throughout his career, but Camila Cabello is the only person he had in mind after writing this song and she immediately impressed him with his dedication and talent.

“I sent her the track and she loved it. She came in and she wrote it. I was just really in awe of how serious she takes the stuff, each take. A lot of pop music, people sing the chorus once and they just fly it over three times,” recalled Ronson in Apple Music description of this song.

If you enjoy retro music videos with ‘70s vibes, Mark Ronson and Lykke Li prepared a special treat just for you. Visual for their new collaboration “Late Night Feelings” is here, and it will take you right back to the disco era.

The euphoric video for Ronson’s latest “sad banger” mostly focuses on Li and shows her dancing around and obsessing over countless photos of Ronson plastered around her apartment. She finally gets to live her dream of being close to him, since the end of the video shows them performing together.

“Late Night Feelings” is the title track from Ronson’s upcoming fifth studio album, which is scheduled to be released on June 21. This record will feature collaborations with several acclaimed female artists, including Camila Cabello, Miley Cyrus, and Alicia Keys.

“When you’re making a record, you’re making 30 songs just to get the best 10 or 12, so the stuff that was resonating, the strongest and the best stuff, all happened to be with a group of female collaborators,” Ronson explained while chatting with Rashida Jones for Interview Magazine.
