]]>One Wayne G was made available through download and streaming on Spotify. A total of 18 songs have proper titles and lyrics, with some of them being previously heard on DeMarco’s live streams.
The rest of the album consists of instrumentals or scratch vocals. These recordings are titled with a date when they were presumably recorded. According to an Instagram story posted on Mac’s Record Label, the album’s title is a nod to NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.
Mac’s Record Label also shared One Wayne G-inspired merch and photos of the album’s vinyl and cassette, hinting at a physical release later.
One Wayne G comes just several months after DeMarco released his fifth studio album Five Easy Hot Dogs. The record was entirely instrumental and was recorded during the musician’s road trip from Los Angeles to New York. It met with favorable reviews from the critics, who described it as experimental in nature but a worthy addition to DeMarco’s catalog.

The track came with an accompanying video that had the Christmas tree ornament of Star Wars’ Emperor Palpatine in the main role. As the song progressed, the camera zoomed in closer on the ornament.

Mac DeMarco has been releasing Christmas songs covers around the holidays for some time now. So far, he did “White Christmas,” Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time,” and “The Christmas Time” among others.
DeMarco also presented his new studio album Here Comes the Cowboy in 2019. The record received polarizing reviews, earning both praise and criticism from fans and critics. It peaked at No.10 on the US Billboard 200.

]]>The post Mac DeMarco “Here Comes The Cowboy”: Refreshingly Simple appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>The opening track doesn’t say much but also tells us everything we need to know about the rest of the album. Mac DeMarco idly repeats “here comes the cowboy” to stripped back tunes and it’s OK because it’s sort of nice to have a break from the experimental and ambitious albums that indie artists have been throwing our way recently. There is none of Muse’s dancing dystopian robots, none of Radiohead’s futuristic anxiety or Arctic Monkeys’ Blade Runner inspired musical orgy. It’s all just stripped back, simple and does exactly what it says on the tin. And it’s oddly refreshing.
There are no real standout tracks on the record. There are no “Salad Days” or “This Old Dog”. If we had to pick a winner, it would be “Finally Alone” which is strangely catchy on the third or fourth listen. Instead, the tracks tie together seamlessly and tell a story. The story is something personal but for the listener, what we hear is the search for comfort. Is life better spent traveling the open road or settling down? Is it OK to just spend the day lying on your lawn watching the clouds? These are the kind of questions Mac DeMarco has us asking ourselves in this tame, stripped back album.
“Choo Choo” is a cute little ditty with an underlying innocence (or is it sarcyness?) It’s almost like DeMarco saying “OK go away now, I don’t want to be famous.” Now that he is being hailed as an indie icon, there’s an unspoken pressure for his lyrics to be profound and his melodies to become increasingly daring and original. DeMarco has responded with a song about a train on which most of the lyrics are “choo choo” and little else. It may sound lazy but really it embraces the genius simplicity of bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
So yes, some critics are going to have a lot to say about Mac DeMarco’s latest album and we personally know a handful of hipsters who are going to be disappointed. At Hot Pop Today though, we have no complaints because Here Comes The Cowboy sums up exactly how we are feeling this May. Simplicity is what we’ve been craving in this bold and busy year. And it sounds like Mac DeMarco feels the same way.

]]>According to DeMarco’s statement, this was the first song he started writing for the new record and was partially inspired by an Oasis documentary.
“The phrase “all of our yesterdays” comes from the play Macbeth.” he explains. “Also I think there’s a “Star Trek” episode from 1969 with the same title; very cool. I had just seen a documentary about Oasis before writing this song, and I was trying to write a gigantic rock and roll hit with my renewed love for the band. I didn’t really get close to that at all, but I’m happy with the song that came out.”
