Last Days will be performed for the first time in the U.S. on February 6, at the Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall. The tickets are already available for sale.

The opera, just like the movie, tells a fictionalized story about Cobain’s last days. Oliver Leith serves as the composer, with Matt Copson and Anna Morrissey directing. Titane star Agathe Rousselle stars as the main character, a musician named Blake. The piece received universal critical acclaim during its run in Linbury Theatre.

“This new opera plunges into the torment that created a modern myth,” it says in the description of the opera.

Kurt Cobain’s estate wasn’t fond of the opera when it came out, calling it an “unauthorized attempt that seeks to profit and benefit from a brief meeting that took place thirty years ago.” Royal Opera House defended itself by saying that the opera adapts Van Sant’s movie and represents a “fictionalized account.

The movie Last Days never mentions Cobain, but the main character’s physical appearance and life story made it clear that he is based on Cobain. The feature received mixed reviews when it first came out but has since developed a cult following.

Love explained that some of the early lyrics for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” can be found in Cobain’s published journals, while others were never made available to the public before. She then went on to recite the first verse and chorus:  

“Come out and play / make up the rules / I know I hope / to buy the truth / who will be the king and queen / of all the outcasted teens.”

“We’re so lazy / and so stupid / blame our parents / and the cupids / a deposit, for a bottle / stick it inside / no role model”

Love also revealed several other alternative lyrics, including:

“Come out and play/ Make up the rules/ I know I hope to buy the truth/ Who will be the king and queen of all the outcasted teens?”

“We’re so lazy and so stupid/ Blame our parents and the cupids/ A deposit for a bottle/ Stick it inside, no role model.”

During her chat with host Rob Harvilla, Love shared other stories about Cobain, including the origins of his “beef” with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and how he wrote Nevermind track “Dumb” in 20 minutes during a plane ride.

One noteworthy pick was “In My Life”, which Grohl explained, “means a lot to me, because it was the song that was played at Kurt Cobain’s memorial.” Referencing, of course, the deceased frontman of Nirvana, Grohl’s old band.

“That day, after everyone had said their piece, this next song came over the speakers. And everyone got to celebrate Kurt’s love of The Beatles one last time together,” Grohl went on, emotionally. “Still to this day, when I hear it, it touches a place in me that no other song ever will. It’s called ‘In My Life’ and knowing how much of a fan Kurt was of The Beatles, and how much of an influence they were, to everything we’ve done ever done…I’d like to play this one for him.”

Another important pick for Grohl was “Hey Jude,” which he said was the first song of The Beatles he had ever heard. “I remember having a sleepover at a friend’s house when I was four or five years old and listening to ‘Hey Jude’ [. . .] I remember that night, laying in my sleeping bag and singing along to the na-na-nas at the end of the song.”

The book, which will be released on April 2^nd, will contain Danny Goldberg’s memories of the band and their frontman Kurt Cobain as well as previously unreleased files. Goldberg will also include a handful of interviews with Cobain’s family, friends, and bandmates Dave Grohl and Kris Novoselic.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain will touch on various topics including Cobain’s marriage with Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, the birth of the couple’s daughter, Francis Bean Cobain, and the musician’s struggles with addiction.

“I began to work with Kurt the year before Nevermind was recorded and remained close to him until days before his death,” said Goldberg back in August when the book was first announced. “Media depictions of Kurt typically focus on the tragedy of his death. While it is impossible to ignore the inner demons which tormented him, in researching and writing Serving the Servant I have been more often reminded of Kurt’s brilliance, his sense of humour and his kindness to most of those around him. He was so complex that no two people experienced the same person, but I hope I am able to add another dimension to Kurt’s legacy.”
