No one had “the resurgence of Kate Bush” on their 2022 bingo card, but that didn’t stop her from making a huge comeback with “Running Up That Hill”. After being featured on Stranger Things, this song became an instant hit and it managed to break three Guinness World Records.

“Running Up That Hill” reached No. 1 in the UK back in June, making Bush the oldest female artist to reach no. 1 in this country. It also set records for the longest time for a track to reach No. 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart and the longest gap between No. 1s.

The Guinness World Records has now confirmed these records, which come 37 years following the song’s initial release. “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” was originally released in 1985, as a part of her fifth studio album Hounds of Love.

Bush reflected on the song’s success in a recent post on her blog, following the premiere of Stranger Things 4: Volume 2, and praised its creators for making something truly spectacular.

“I was so delighted that the Duffer Brothers wanted to use RUTH for Max’s totem but now having seen the whole of this last series, I feel deeply honored that the song was chosen to become a part of their roller-coaster journey,” wrote Bush.

The fourth season of Stranger Things is out, and its soundtrack is a true love letter to the ’80s. If we had to pick a single stand-out song that made a splash this season, it would be Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, but how did this iconic hit end up on the beloved Netflix show?

Spoilers are ahead, but if you’ve already seen the new season of Stranger Things, you know that “Running Up That Hill” happens to be Max’s favorite song and that she used it to break Vecna’s spell and escape Upside Down in the episode “Dear Billy”.

The show’s music supervisor, Nora Felder, discussed the song’s role with Variety, explaining that she spent a lot of time finding a song that perfectly fit Max’s complex feelings.

“It immediately struck me with its deep chords of the possible connection to Max’s emotional struggles and took on more significance as Bush’s song marinated in my conscious awareness,” said Felder.

Once Felder found the perfect song, they just had to get Kate Bush on board. Sony Music Publishing’s Wende Crowley received the request and sent the singer script pages and footage for a review because she’s very selective when it comes to licensing her music.

It turns out Bush was already a big fan of the show, and it didn’t take her long to give Felder permission to use the song in Max’s pivotal scene. It was the right choice to make because “Running Up That Hill” reached No. 1 on iTunes after being featured on Stranger Things.

Being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is one of the most prestigious honors music artists could possibly ask for, and the class of 2021 is shaping up to be pretty amazing. The list of nominees is in, and it includes the likes of Foo Fighters, Jay Z, Tina Turner, and many more.

According to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s official rules, an artist or a band is eligible for a nomination at least 25 years after their first commercial recording.

In addition to the previously mentioned artists, the list of this year’s nominees also includes Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Fela Kuti, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Dionne Warwick, and Carole King.

Seven out of 16 nominees made the cut for the first time, and the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, John Sykes, believes they left a significant impact on the music industry.

“This remarkable ballot reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates. These nominees have left an indelible impact on the sonic landscape of the world and influenced countless artists that have followed them,” said Sykes in a press release.

Inductees will be announced in May, with the official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony taking place in Cleveland, Ohio this fall.

Back in 1991, Kate Bush released a cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” as part of tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Bush’s reggae-themed cover ended up being a big success and is now considered one of the best covers of this iconic track. As it turns out, there is a music video that follows the song.

Bush recently announced a compilation The Other Side, which contains four discs of her rarities, and as part of the announcement, shared a long-lost music video for “Rocket Man” which she also directed. Check it out below.

“I remember buying this when it came out as a single by Elton John,” Bush said of “Rocket Man” in a statement posted on her website. “I couldn’t stop playing it – I loved it so much. Most artists in the mid seventies played guitar but Elton played piano and I dreamed of being able to play like him.”

“I wanted to make it different from the original and thought it could be fun to turn it into a reggae version. It meant a great deal to me that they chose it to be the first single release from the album,” she added. “That meant I also had the chance to direct the video which I loved doing – making it a performance video, shot on black and white film, featuring all the musicians and… the Moon!”

Besides “Rocket Man,” The Other Side will feature several other covers by Kate Bush including George and Ira Gershwin’s “The Man I Love,” and another Elton John cover “Candle In The Win, alongside an early demo of her hit song “Humming.” The compilation is set for release on March 8th.
