]]>“Running Up That Hill” reached No. 1 in the UK back in June, making Bush the oldest female artist to reach no. 1 in this country. It also set records for the longest time for a track to reach No. 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart and the longest gap between No. 1s.
The Guinness World Records has now confirmed these records, which come 37 years following the song’s initial release. “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” was originally released in 1985, as a part of her fifth studio album Hounds of Love.
Bush reflected on the song’s success in a recent post on her blog, following the premiere of Stranger Things 4: Volume 2, and praised its creators for making something truly spectacular.
“I was so delighted that the Duffer Brothers wanted to use RUTH for Max’s totem but now having seen the whole of this last series, I feel deeply honored that the song was chosen to become a part of their roller-coaster journey,” wrote Bush.

]]>Spoilers are ahead, but if you’ve already seen the new season of Stranger Things, you know that “Running Up That Hill” happens to be Max’s favorite song and that she used it to break Vecna’s spell and escape Upside Down in the episode “Dear Billy”.
The show’s music supervisor, Nora Felder, discussed the song’s role with Variety, explaining that she spent a lot of time finding a song that perfectly fit Max’s complex feelings.
“It immediately struck me with its deep chords of the possible connection to Max’s emotional struggles and took on more significance as Bush’s song marinated in my conscious awareness,” said Felder.
Once Felder found the perfect song, they just had to get Kate Bush on board. Sony Music Publishing’s Wende Crowley received the request and sent the singer script pages and footage for a review because she’s very selective when it comes to licensing her music.
It turns out Bush was already a big fan of the show, and it didn’t take her long to give Felder permission to use the song in Max’s pivotal scene. It was the right choice to make because “Running Up That Hill” reached No. 1 on iTunes after being featured on Stranger Things.

“I wanted to make it different from the original and thought it could be fun to turn it into a reggae version. It meant a great deal to me that they chose it to be the first single release from the album,” she added. “That meant I also had the chance to direct the video which I loved doing – making it a performance video, shot on black and white film, featuring all the musicians and… the Moon!”
