The show in Seattle was part of Jack White’s ongoing tour across the United States in support of his third solo studio album Boarding House Reach. The record was met with polarizing reviews from the critics, with some calling it his best solo effort to date while others viewed it as a mediocre album. Despite this, Boarding House Reach performed commercially really well and topped the US Billboard 200 as well as Canadian album charts. It cracked the top 10 in four other countries.

Again, it is not the Jack White you would expect. The song is heavy on the riffs and squealing guitars but also toys with some unusual additions like bongos. “Corporation” is just another indicator that Boarding House Reach will be more experimental and will represent a new territory for White. The interesting thing about the album is that White recorded it within six days. Initially, he intended to do it in just three days in a New York recording studio, surrounding himself with musicians from different backgrounds including people who played with Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar. Then, he took three more days in a studio in Los Angeles, this time with a different group of musicians, who also added their touch to the record. After those two sessions, White took upon himself to edit the tracks and add new elements.

Jack White will release his third solo album on March 23, 2018. He recently spoke about Boarding House Reach with the Rolling Stones and revealed that we should expect a modern record, fitting for 2018. “It almost hurt my feelings to condense some of those songs, but I wanted to make it relatable in 2018,” White said. “The entire record, to me, is incredibly modern. I wanted to take punk, hip-hop and rock & roll, and funnel it all into a 2018 time capsule.”

“The new album sees Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern.” said the press release of White’s. “Written and conceived while holed up in a spartan apartment with no outside distractions, Jack replicated the identical environment and used the same gear as when he was a 15-year-old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation) to pen sketches of the album’s songs. The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain — crunching rock ‘n’ roll, electro and hard funk, proto-punk, hip-hop, gospel blues, and even country — all remapped and born anew to fit White’s matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation. BOARDING HOUSE REACH is a testament to the breadth of Jack White’s creative power and his bold artistic ambition.”

White also announced upcoming shows that he will play in support of the album including Atlanta, GA’s Shaky Knees Music Festival, Boston Calling, and the Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York. Additional dates will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

“Connected by Love” has an unusual synth that can sound uneasy to the ear, but luckily goes away quickly and shifts into the well-known voice of Jack White we love. The song also has an accompanying music video which was directed by Pasqual Gutierrez and filmed in Los Angeles and Nashville. The video is dark and melancholic, but shows we are all “connected by love”.

“Respect Commander” on the other hands, sounds a bit more experimental than expected. It’s squeaky guitars and distortion might not be suitable for everyone, but the drum parts are a real treat. Unlike the previous one, “Respect Commander” didn’t get a music video treatment.

Although the release date for Boarding House Reach is yet to be revealed, Jack White recently said that the album is almost finished.

“It’s practically done, just some finishing touches,” White said back in November. “It’s a bizarre one. I’ve just got to let it settle. I need to listen to it by myself. I haven’t been able to listen to it by myself for awhile.”

This will be his third solo album and the first one since 2014’s Lazaretto. Boarding House Reach will be definitely something new since White decided to switch it up when it comes to the process of writing music.

“I want to write like Michael Jackson would write — instead of writing parts on the instruments or humming melodies, you think of them. To do everything in my head and to do it in silence and use only one room,” he said.
