In the runup to their upcoming album Giants Of All Sizes, Elbow has shared a brand new single, “Empires.”

The new track is distinguishably an Elbow track as a result of Guy Garvey’s unique voice. Musically and lyrically though, the band seem to be trying out something new.

“Baby / Empires crumble all the time / Pay it no mind / You just happened to witness mine,” Garvey sings. Distorted organs chime in between his soulful moans, and the bass is dominant throughout the track. The vibe is loose and at times, it sounds improvised.

“We thought the studio would give us inner-city vibes but we were on the edge of Hamburg which meant we spent more time in Clouds Hill [Studios] rather than exploring,” producer and keyboardist Craig Potter said about the new album.

“With time to spare, we sat around and played together in a way we haven’t for a long time and experimented and improvised with the music which led to the looser feel you hear on ‘Empires’”.

Giants Of All Sizes will be released October 11.

If you’re a huge indie fanatic who enjoys seeing all your faves in one place, this year’s Y Not Festival is a place from your dreams. The organizers behind this event recently announced an impressive lineup for the 2019 edition of the festival, which features the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and Foals.

Y Not Festival has been around since 2006, and it’s been taking place in the small village of Pikehall ever since. This year’s event will be held on the weekend between July 25 and 28, and its organizers managed to convince a number of beloved artists to head to this tiny town in the Derbyshire Dales.

“We’re so happy to have a 2019 line-up bursting at the seams. We’ve got a huge mix of new and old faces to the Derbyshire Dales, with massive returns from classic bands such as White Lies, plus the huge welcomes to the UK’s hottest emerging stars like Idles and Mahalia,” read the statement released by organizers of this event.

Elbow, Two Door Cinema Club and Foals will be leading the way as headliners, but the list of performers features several equally popular bands, such as Wolf Alice, Franz Ferdinand and You Me At Six.

Elbow frontman Guy Garvey is now a university lecturer at the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Garvey was made a Honorary Doctor of Arts at the university in 2012 and will now offer a master class in writing music.

While he will be helping students boost their musical ability, Garvey also feels that doing the classes will help him better himself.

While speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: “I’m really looking forward to working with young songwriters at Manchester Metropolitan University.

“I’ve never had a conversation with another writer that hasn’t in some way informed my own work.

“I have been lucky enough to learn from some of the best ever. From Frank Black to Wayne Coyne. From Jolie Holland to Jimi Goodwin. From Jesca Hoop to John Bramwell. Robert Plant to Trevor Horn to Laura Marling to Josh Pearson. Steven Fretwell to Elton John. Ron Sexsmith to Matt Berninger to Lianne La Havas. Hamilton Leithouser to Kate Stables to Peter Gabriel.

“Those are some names people will know. I’m looking forward to working with names that everyone will come to know in a city that has nurtured some of the very best.”
