]]>The duo’s latest collaboration interpolates the timeless hit “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and the Danish Europop band, who have been fully credited as co-writers and performers. Minaj and Ice Spice put a hip-hop-infused twist on the original song while sticking to its infectious and catchy beat.
Having Nicki Minaj work on the Barbie soundtrack was a no-brainer since the rapper made the Barbie doll a significant part of her public persona and even refers to her fans as “Barbz”. Using the sample of “Barbie Girl” could’ve felt too cheesy, but Minaj felt they managed to do it in a way that made sense.
“This is the first time that someone had put this sample in a way that didn’t make me uncomfortable or gimmicky. I figured out that it needed to be a beat that would still give Barbie & Nicki,” Minaj told Buzzing Pop.
This marks the second collaboration between Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, following the success of their “Princess Diana” remix, which reached no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Barbie Girl” was originally released by Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua in 1997, as the third single from their debut studio album Aquarium. It went on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time and reached No. 1 in many countries across the globe, including Australia and the UK.

Lene Nystrøm told Variety that using the song would be “cheese on cheese” and that the original won’t be featured in the film. Søren Rasted added they’re still excited to see Barbie because “it’s going to bring [them] a lot of attention, no matter what.”
