The BRIT Billion Award is presented to acts who managed to reach one billion streams in the UK, and one brilliant artist just joined the pack. Amy Winehouse was announced as the latest recipient of the posthumous BRIT Billion Award, and her parents collected it on her behalf.

The BRIT Billion Award has been introduced in 2023, and it’s been given to 25 artists so far. Amy Winehouse is the latest star to join the roster after crossing one billion online streams in the United Kingdom, including over 150 million plays for her seminal song “Back to Black”.

Mitch and Janis Winehouse, the parents of the late singer, accepted the award on her behalf and said they’re proud to see her music resonate with the audiences today.

“It’s amazing that she is still winning awards for her incredible talent and achievements… It’s wonderful that her music is being discovered by new audiences of young people who love it just as much as her contemporaries. We are so proud of Amy. Thank you,” they said in a statement.

Amy Winehouse rose to prominence during the 2000s with her albums Frank and Back to Black. She became one of the defining British artists of her generation and won five Grammy Awards for Back to Black before her tragic passing in 2011.

The Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black is hitting the theaters this year, and another iconic musician will be involved in this project. Sam Taylor-Johnson tapped none other than Nick Cave to score this highly-anticipated biopic alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis.

Taylor-Johnson confirmed Ellis and Cave will be scoring this project while chatting with Variety, and said they were the only musicians she considered for this job.

“Over the years, I’ve listened to everything they’ve composed and longed to realize the dream of working together. Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score,” said Taylor-Johnson.

Taylor-Johnson also had access to Winehouse’s songs from Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing, including her biggest hits “Back to Black” and “Rehab”, performed by the film’s leading lady Marisa Abela. That didn’t stop Cave and Ellis from composing about 20-30 minutes of music for this biopic, according to Variety.

This duo goes way back, and they’ve been working together since the 90s, when Ellis played violin on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ album Let Love In. He later became a full-time member of the band, and he and Cave went on to score several films by each other’s side, including Lawless, The Road, and Hell or High Water.

A hologram of late British singer Amy Winehouse is set to embark on a worldwide tour next year. The singer’s estate joined forces with BASE Hologram to plot series of shows in the second part of 2019.

According to the press release, the tour will feature “digitally remastered arrangements of [Winehouse’s] classics” while “Rehab” singer’s hologram will be backed “by a live band, singers and theatrical stagecraft.” The shows are expected to last 75 to 110 minutes.

Amy Winehouse hologram tour will also help a good cause since part of the ticket sales will help raise money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The foundation was set up by Winehouse’s family in 2011 and helps combat and prevent drug and alcohol abuse among young people. The organization also provides other services to disadvantaged youth.

“This is a dream for us,” said Winehouse’s father Mitch about the tour. “To see her perform again is something special that really can’t be put into words. Our daughter’s music touched the lives of millions of people, and it means everything that her legacy will continue in this innovative and groundbreaking way.”

Hologram tours of late music stars are getting common in the past couple of years. This will be Base Hologram’s third similar project, with the company currently participating in hologram tours of Roy Orbison and the opera singer Maria Callas. A hologram of Billie Holliday is presently playing daily shows at LA’s Hologram USA Theater while hologram tours of Ronnie James Dio and Frank Zappa are currently in the works.

One of Amy Winehouse’s early demos just found its way online. Song titled “My Own Way” surfaced, thanks to the late singer’s producer and composer Gil Cang, who worked with her during her early career. According to him, the song was recorded in 2001, when Winehouse was 17, and before she had her debut album out or a contract with Island Records. Amy came to his studio in Hornsey Road and recorded the song, produced and co-composed by James McMillan, in three takes. “My Own Way” was a part of the demo which Winehouse used to get the attention of big record labels. Unlike her later works, which were influenced by jazz, this is a pop song with R&B sound to it.

“We’d been writing quite a lot of pop tunes, doing a lot of pop promos with various artists who would come in, many of various, dubious talent.” – said Cang. “It was at a particularly dire time in the pop world – lots of terrible, terrible girl bands and boy bands and we had to make something for them. Amy came in to see us, opened her mouth and just blew us all away.”

“I’ve had it knocking about for so long,” he added. “I found it again last week and thought – I’ll put it out there so people could hear it.”

Amy Winehouse released her debut album Frank in 2003, which sold in more than million copies and received positive reviews from the critics. Her second album, 2006’s Back to Black, was an even bigger success, receiving widespread acclaim and topping the charts in more than 20 countries including the United States and the UK. It also brought her five Grammys at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. Unfortunately, this turned out to be her last release, since Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, aged 27.

The BRIT Billion Award has been introduced in 2023, and it’s been given to 25 artists so far. Amy Winehouse is the latest star to join the roster after crossing one billion online streams in the United Kingdom, including over 150 million plays for her seminal song “Back to Black”.
