Tony Bennett, the iconic jazz and traditional pop singer whose career spanned seven decades, passed away at 96. Bennett leaves an impressive legacy behind after selling over 50 million records, winning 20 Grammy Awards, and many other prestigious accolades.

Bennett died at his home in New York City on July 21, after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and his family confirmed his passing in an official statement: “Tony left us today but he was still singing the other day at his piano and his last song was, ‘Because of You,’ his first #1 hit. Tony, because of you we have your songs in our heart forever.”

Bennett’s rise to prominence started when he dropped “Because of You” in 1951, and he went on to release 70 albums in the years to come. He endured many shifts in the music industry over the decades, staying loyal to his signature style, and gave us such hits as “Rags to Riches” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”.

Bennett retired from performing in 2021, with a final concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. His retirement came shortly after he revealed he’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, but he kept making music after his diagnosis and found success with the collaborative album Love for Sale alongside Lady Gaga.

Sufjan Stevens is one of the most interesting musicians working today and his next album will be another proof of his incredible versatility. He announced his next studio album Reflections and gave us a taste of things to come with the new single “Ekstasis”.

Reflections is basically a studio recording of a score that Stevens wrote for the ballet by choreographer Justin Peck, performed by Houston Ballet in 2019. This is the sixth collaboration between the duo, who kicked off their collaboration with two ballets for the New York City Ballet: Year of the Rabbit (2012) and Everywhere We Go (2014).

This time around, Stevens’ score was written for two pianos and eleven dancers. Reflections will feature a studio recording of the seven movements, starting with “Ekstasis” because it perfectly captures the energy of the whole album.

“I’m constantly thinking about bodies moving through space when I’m writing for ballet – that is what has informed this music, first and foremost,” said Stevens in a statement.

Reflections will be released on May 19 via Asthmatic Kitty Records, and it’s been described as a record about “energy, light, and duality.” It’s Stevens’ second album consisting of compositions for piano, following The Decalogue in 2019, based on Justin Peck’s ballet of the same name.

Jonny Greenwood is the Guitarist of Radiohead, but he is also an acclaimed film composer. Now, Greenwood announces his new label, Octatonic Records, which will focus on contemporary classical music.

“Since doing my first soundtrack [2003’s Bodysong], I’ve become friends with lots of these remarkable musicians, as well as more familiar with the music they play. It’s a whole world out there,” wrote Greenwood in his announcement on the label’s site.

Greenwood continued: “I stand in awe of classically trained UK musicians: a 20-something carrying a cello case will always be more impressive than someone with a guitar. It’s just harder to do. It takes more commitment, and the sounds they make are so limitless — for all that the instruments they play are ‘traditional.’”

Greenwood said he will only record soloists or small groups of musicians. “And as it’s my party, including in the releases some of my own small ideas that have never been recorded, like 88 (for solo piano), and Miniatures from Water for piano, violin, string drone, and tanpura.”The label has actually released some titles by now, including Bach’s Volume: 1: Partita No.2 in D Minor on vinyl and digital, as well as Volume 2: Industry, Water, the latter consists of Greenwood’s “Three Miniatures From Water” on one side and composer Michael Gordon’s “Industry” on the other.

This week, on July 20, we will be celebrating the 50th year anniversary of the NASA moon landing. While you raise your glasses to Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and all the other people who made man’s venture into space possible, moonwalk to these epic space-themed tunes.

Space Oddity (David Bowie)

Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, the epic Bowie track tells the story of an astronaut lost in space. It became his first Top 10 hit.

Brain Damage/Eclipse (Pink Floyd)

“I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon” is the most romantically relevant lyric as we celebrate man’s first steps on the lunar rock.

The Race For Space (Public Service Broadcasting)

Jumping back into the 21st century, Public Service Broadcasting wrote a whole album on man’s scientific enterprise and the space race.

Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater)

A lively hit for fans of the supernatural.

The Killing Moon (Echo & The Bunnymen)

The perhaps less appropriately titled “The Killing Moon” is still a legendary hit.

Rocketman (Elton John)

A song so poignant that it inspired the Elton John biopic of the same name. NASA astronauts probably ought to put this on their playlist.

Sail To The Moon (Radiohead)

Radiohead’s “Sail To The Moon” is a haunting song of man’s desire to escape to space and sail among the stars.

Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven)

And let’s not forget the beautiful classic piece from Beethoven, inspired by the beauty of the moon.

Thom Yorke will debut his classical composition “Don’t Fear The Light” for the first time this weekend.

The incredibly talented musician will share his composition using two pianos along with a modular synthesizer. The performance will air on April 28 on BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified.

During the show, Yorke will play some of his other pieces including work he did for the Suspirium soundtrack. Here is the full programme:

David Chalmin: Particule no 5 – Particule no 6 – (feat Thom Yorke vocals)
Bryce Dessner: Haven
Thom Yorke: Don’t Fear the Light
Thom Yorke: Gawpers
Thom Yorke: Suspirium
Thom Yorke (vocals, electronics, and modular synthesizer)
Katia & Marielle Labeque (piano)
Bryce Dessner (guitar)
David Chalmin (guitar)

“Katia and Marielle suggested for a few years that I write some music for them,” the Radiohead frontman explained to Unclassified. “Usually I would laugh and explain that I couldn’t read music, but in truth, I was intrigued by the idea.

“I realized writing for score or on a sequencer and modular gear are really not so far apart but the best part for me was watching the basics of what I’d written being brought to life by the sisters and their interpretation, making the notes theirs.”

Tune in on Sunday (April 28) to hear the full program.
