Dead & Company have confirmed that they will no longer be performing at Woodstock 50. Per Rolling Stone, they join John Fogerty and Jay-Z who have also reportedly withdrawn their participation. 

The announcements follow the festival organizers’ announcement Friday that the festival has released all previously booked artists from their contracts. This basically means that there’s no knowing what the lineup is going to end up looking like. 

More recent Woodstock 50 news includes the organizer’s last-ditch effort to secure a different location for the multi-day anniversary event. After Woodstock 50 had not procured the proper permits to host the concert at the festival’s original location, the production moved to Maryland. 

“Woodstock 50 approached Merriweather about hosting their event here in Columbia, Maryland,” Seth Hurwitz, operator of Merriweather Post Pavilion, said in a statement on Thursday. “The Woodstock folks are working on securing the artists now. If the bands come, we’ll produce the show. We’re looking forward to getting an update as soon as Woodstock 50 has one.”

Town of Vernon Supervisor Randy Watson told the Poughkeepsie Journal that the Woodstock 50 festival organizers have applied for a permit to hold the event at Vernon Downs, located about 56 kilometers east of Syracuse, NY.

The original plan was to hold the festival in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Woodstock at Watkins Glen International, which has the capacity of 150,000 people. The newly proposed venue is much smaller, with a capacity of 45,000-50,000 people.

The three-day event has been trouble-ridden, with its former financial partner, Dentsu Aegis, pulling out of the festival in May. However, according to Variety, festival organizers have announced that they have secured a new financial partner, Oppenheimer & Co. investment bank.

With less than two months away, the festival still has no venue and tickets have yet to go on sale.

“Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract,” a statement read. “As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival.”

Woodstock 50 also shared a statement which read: “CID Entertainment had been engaged to provide enhanced camping, travel packages and transportation for Woodstock 50. Given developments, we can confirm that CID is no longer involved in Woodstock 50 in any capacity.”

They also confirmed that the festival is by no mean canceled and that they are hunting for a new venue. A spokesperson for the festival said: “We are in discussions with another venue to host Woodstock 50 on August 16th—18th and look forward to sharing the new location when tickets go on sale in the coming weeks.”

Well, you will soon be able to hear almost every song played during the three days of the festival in a new massive Woodstock box-set that is coming out to mark the festival’s 50th anniversary.

Titled Woodstock 50 — Back to the Garden — The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive, the box set will come on 38 discs and will feature almost 36 hours of recordings. The release will be comprised out of 432 songs, 267 of which were never officially released before.

The box-set will not only contain the full performances from The Who, Joe Cocker, Sly, and the Family  and Stone, Crosby, Stills, and Nash & Young, but also the full sets from the Band, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Janis Joplin, which have never been available before.

All the songs on the release will be arranged chronologically by both the day and set time.

“There have been large boxed sets devoted to particular eras or tours — the Grateful Dead do a great job of that sort of thing — but there’s never, to my knowledge, been an attempt to present a large-scale durational experience of this sort,” said Andy Zax, the Los Angeles producer and archivist who co-produced the set with Steve Woolard.

“The Woodstock tapes give us a singular opportunity for a kind of sonic time travel, and my intention is to transport people back to 1969. There aren’t many other concerts you could make this argument about.”

Woodstock 50 has been plagued by complications from the get-go, and rumors of its cancellation have been circling around for a while. It seemed like things became official after their financial partner Dentsu Aegis Network called it quits.

“Despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners, and attendees,” read an official statement published by Billboard.

The list of performers included the likes of The Killers, Imagine Dragons and Jay-Z, and fans of the festival were heartbroken after news of its cancellation made the headlines. Woodstock bosses, however, claim that the 50th anniversary is still on, and they’re doing everything in their power to make it work.

“Although our financial partner is withdrawing, we will, of course, be continuing with the planning of the festival and intend to bring on new partners. The bottom line is, there is going to be a Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival, as there must be, and it’s going to be a blast.”

We’re yet to see how this story ends, but we’re hoping for a happy ending. Inaugural Woodstock took place in 1969 and changed the course of music history, and it deserves an amazing 50th anniversary, worthy of its rich legacy.

An email sent out from the festival to ticket providers said: “There is currently a hold on the Woodstock 50 on-sale date. We are waiting on an official press statement from Woodstock 50 regarding updated [announcements], ticket pricing, and overall festival information. We will get this information to you as soon as we receive it.”

The festival will see some of the biggest names in music playing in NYC. After the disaster that was Fyre Festival, it’s no surprise that people have learned to be a little skeptical of festivals that seem too good to be true.

Fortunately, though, the festival will still be going ahead. Festival Michael Lang confirmed that the rumors were false to Billboard. He said: “Woodstock is a phenomenon that for fifty years has drawn attention to its principles and also the rumors that can be attached to that attention.”

So everyone can relax. The festival of the year is still going ahead.
