]]>Radiohead has gained a reputation over the years for making music to wallow to. Their sound is often described as “depressing” although we prefer to use terms like “profound” and “haunting”.
When King of Limbs was released back in 2011, Yorke claimed he wanted to make music “people could dance to”. In the music video for “Lotus Flower,” he busted out his best moves and became the subject of many memes.
Speaking with BBC 6 Music, Shaun Keaveny asked him if he would ever do Strictly or I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!. Yorke then revealed that he had already been asked.
“Oh Strictly,” he exclaimed. “I think they asked me once in the early days of the program. I was like ‘you what’? I’m pretty sure I got the call from the office one day.”
To clarify, Strictly first aired back in 2004. This was a few years after Radiohead released Kid A and Amnesiac. Why Strictly reached out to Yorke at this point is beyond us.
Anyway, here’s a throwback to Yorke busting a move to “Lotus Flower”. Enjoy.

]]>As a solo artist, Thom Yorke’s music is a little more playful, experimenting with different styles and dance rhythms. Ultimately, his work remains a niche art form for the anxious souls of the world. Although Anima landed on Netflix earlier this year, the notion of Yorke engaging with modern pop culture is still a surprising one.
Nonetheless, the Radiohead icon has confessed to being a Billie Elish fan. He took his daughter to her concert recently and recalled the moment he realized Sam Smith was standing behind him. Speaking with The Times, he said: “We sat down and whats-his-name, the guy who did the Bond film we didn’t do? He stands behind us and I’m sitting with my daughter, her friends, and my girlfriend, when suddenly everyone goes ‘Saaaam!’ I’m, like, ‘Aaaaargh!’”
He continued: “I like Billie Eilish. She’s doing her own thing. Nobody’s telling her what to do.”
And so it is official. Thom Yorke has joined the likes of Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John in declaring himself a fan of the When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? star.
We can only hope that they will one day collaborate on something darker and more depressing than the charts have ever heard before.

]]>These days, the band are very much focused on their solo projects. Johnny Greenwood is an established film composer and Thom Yorke recently took his own hand to composition for the chilling Suspiria score. Although the band are occupied with their solo projects, this does not mean that Radiohead are over.
Speaking with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1, the frontman shared information on his new album and also opened up about the band.
When asked about the process of creating music with Radiohead, Yorke said: “When I’m rooting around ideas and stuff, I don’t really…it’s like a child playing with LEGO.
“I used to, at least, play a bunch of chords, mumble over the top, send them round to the guys and then they’d find things in them and say, ‘That’s good, that’s good, can we work on that?’ Only at that point do I feel I have their permission to connect with it in a different way. Then I can like pick up the mic if someone else has got the music around it, in its most basic form.”
Thom Yorke’s upcoming solo album ANIMA is out now.

“Katia and Marielle suggested for a few years that I write some music for them,” the Radiohead frontman explained to Unclassified. “Usually I would laugh and explain that I couldn’t read music, but in truth, I was intrigued by the idea.
“I realized writing for score or on a sequencer and modular gear are really not so far apart but the best part for me was watching the basics of what I’d written being brought to life by the sisters and their interpretation, making the notes theirs.”

]]>Now, the Radiohead frontman is giving a series of live shows with Minimalist Dream House. During his performance at Philharmonie de Paris, he debuted his new track “Gawpers” for the first time. You can listen to the track here:
“Let the demons out your head, Let the demons out your head,” he sings. “How they grow, How they stare, How they go.”
The new track is clearly inspired by his work on Suspiria. In the early 2000s, Yorke went through a phase of experimenting with dance music to create upbeat, experimental tracks. Now, everything is stripped back, minimal and beautifully haunting. We are witnessing a new and curiouse phase of Yorke’s 25 year music career.

]]>The post Thom Yorke’s “Suspiria Unreleased Material”: More Jarring Than Atmospheric appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>What’s interesting about the unreleased material is just how fiercely it has divided critics. While some critics cannot help but praise everything the Radiohead frontman does, others deem the release to be wildly unnecessary. At Hot Pop Today, we’re having a hard time getting off the fence.
Let’s start with the positives. The album is almost entirely instrumental and keeps it tone well with the movie. “A Conversation With Just Your Eyes” succeeds in being beautifully atmospheric and creepy while also being unpleasantly jarring in an extremely effective way. Thom’s vocals are so distorted here that they sound like a wheezing animal’s dying breaths. It’s remarkably haunting and darkly chilling.
The same can be said of all the early tracks of the album. The record introduces new tracks including “The 7th7th7th7thson” which is just a minute long but terrifying. After this though, the music sounds like a bunch of teenagers who have gotten high in a makeshift studio.
“Volk
And yet the rest of the “Volk” tracks consist of unpleasant screeching sounds. Even on a set of $500 speakers, they sound jarring and uncomfortable. Yes, this is appropriate for a horror movie soundtrack but it doesn’t really encourage to buy the album. This makes us wonder who actually will be buying the Suspiria Unreleased Material LP when it does come out on vinyl.
Ultimately, the best we can say of the first half of the album is that if you are trying to write a horror screenplay, playing this in the background will give you all kinds of creepy inspiration. By the end of the album though, you’ll more likely be in a hurry to finish the page you are writing so you can turn the dreadful screeching off.
So yes, as much as it pains to admit it, Thom Yorke’s latest release is slightly disappointing. Of course, the previously released Suspiria soundtrack more than compensates.

Before reuniting Atoms for Peace on stage, Thom Yorke treated the audience by performing several supergroup’s songs including “Amok” and “Truth Ray.”
You can check out the clip from the reunion below.
Atoms for Peace formed in 2009 when Thom Yorke recruited Flea, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco to back him up during the live tour for The Eraser. After the tour wrapped up in early 2010, the group decided to spend three days playing together and recording original material. After two years of editing and arranging the records, AFP released their debut album Amok in 2013.
Although the album was a success, reaching No.2 at the US Billboard, the group disbanded after a tour across U.S., Japan, and Europe.

The goosebump-inducing do collaborate on the emotional track “Shallow” which brought a tear to our eyes before we even saw the movie.
Dumplin’ was the movie of 2018 we had no idea we’d love as much as we did. Dolly Parton’s voice is as beautiful as ever in this emotional original song.
