This new album, the group’s first since 2016’s Alone, is produced by Stephen Street, known for his works with The Smiths, Blur, and The Cranberries. The songs were co-authored by frontwoman Chrissie Hynde and lead guitarist James Walbourne.

As part of the announcement, The Pretenders also debuted the first single from the album, “The Buzz.” Hear it below.

“I think we all know that love affairs can take on the characteristics of drug addiction,” said Hynde of the song. “‘The Buzz’ is about that. Not mine, of course—I’m never obsessive never obsessive never obsessive.”

Hate for Sale will also see the contributions from founding member Martin Chambers. The drummer and founding member of the band didn’t take part in recording sessions for Alone and 2008’s Break Up the Concrete, although he was present for most of the touring activities. Chambers and Hynde remain the only two members of The Pretenders’ original lineup.

Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders explained the event in a press release: “We are delighted to be playing this unexpected end of the year show with Suede in aid of our dear pal John Brandham, most trusted friend and deluxe crew member.

“John suffered a medical setback recently and will, therefore, be sadly missed during our 2020 tours – but to see him through in the mean-time, we’re doing the mother of all benefits. Should be a great night!”

Suede’s Brett Anderson has mentioned Brandham in his memoir, Afternoon With The Blinds Drawn, which came out recently. He described Brandham as “the perfect person with whom to spend long journeys; he is kind and respectful and very funny, possessing a bone-dry, self-deprecating Tottenham fan’s wit and the flattened, drawling vowels of a broad Estuary accent.”

Hynde will release her own album of covers, titled Valve Bone Woe, on September 6. The record will see The Pretenders’ vocalist and guitarist delivering her versions of songs from Frank, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane, Nick Drake, and others.

According to Hynde, the covers will jazz-influenced.

“I’m not hugely interested in branching out into other musical genres, being a devout rock singer as such, but jazz is something I grew up around,” – said Hynde about Valve Bone Woe. “Jazz got sidelined by rock & roll in the ‘60s, but now the demise of rock seems to be heralding in a newfound interest in it, the most creative and innovative musical forms of the 20th century. I’m happy to jump on the bandwagon.”

As part of the announcement, Chrissie Hynde also shared two songs from the LP; Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No” and Don Raye and Gene De Paul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Hear them below.

Hynde’s latest album release came in 2016 when she released Alone with The Pretenders. Prior to that, she presented her debut solo album Stockholm in 2014.
