Yesterday imagines a world where almost everyone’s forgotten that The Beatles existed, and it presents their music in a whole new light.
Dexter Fletcher gave us one of the best biopics of the year with Rocketman, and it was truly amazing to hear Elton John’s biggest hits in this setting.
The Lion King remake may lack the magic of the original, but its soundtrack is still pretty amazing.
This horror movie features several pretty unusual musical choices – having “Good Vibrations” play in the background of one of the most intense scenes comes to mind – but that’s exactly what makes it amazing.

]]>And it’s also given rise to some impossible mashups that should never work, and yet somehow they do.
Case in point: A YouTuber called William Maranci has released a viral mashup a few days ago, impossibly wedding “Circle of Life” from Disney’s 1994 The Lion King with Korn’s “Freak on a Leash” from their 1998 album Follow the Leader.
On paper, this should never have happened. These two songs are so tonally different it is hard to imagine they could ever co-exist, let alone support each other. “Circle of Life” is an African-themed anthem of optimism, while “Freak on a Leash” is a harsh and dark song, complete with Korn’s signature heavily distorted guitars.
But this is where the magic takes place: When Jonathan Davis’ vocals are superimposed over the Disney music, they somehow harmonize in a way that takes out much of their poignancy — unless, of course, ones listen to the words rather than just the melody.
The result is a surprisingly uplifting hymn that sounds almost like a prayer. In true mashup fashion, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
The only question remaining is how to name this hybrid; comments to the video seem to be divided between “The Lion Korn” and “The Circle of Leash”. What do you think?

]]>This stunning video is filled with breathtaking scenes from the movie itself, but it also features a series of equally dreamlike sequences of Beyoncé, her backup dancers, and her daughter Ivy Blue who made a brief cameo at the very beginning of the video.
Beyoncé wanted to capture “the beauty of color, the beauty of melanin, the beauty of tradition” with this vibrant video. She’ll try to bring the same kind of authenticity to the upcoming album The Lion King: The Gift, produced and curated by her.
“This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa and I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it. I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa,” explained Beyoncé during ABC’s special The Lion King: Can You Feel the Love Tonight.

]]>The album will include songs written by a collection of African artists. It will also include a Beyoncé original titled “Spirit”, which will appear on the film’s soundtrack. The song will appear in a touching scene involving her character, Nala.
“This is sonic cinema,” Beyoncé said Beyoncé in a statement. “This is a new experience of storytelling. I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film. It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced by everything from R&B, pop, hip hop, and Afro Beat.”
She continued: “I wanted to put everyone on their own journey to link the storyline. Each song was written to reflect the film’s storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery while listening to a new contemporary interpretation. It was important that the music was not only performed by the most interesting and talented artists but also produced by the best African producers. Authenticity and heart were important to me.”
The album will drop next week on July 19.
