The Kinks are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking 1969 LP Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) with a four-disc deluxe edition box set.

According to Pitchfork, the massive anniversary box set will include new mono and stereo mixes of Arthur, bonus tracks, demo, and rehearsal recordings, and the long-lost solo album from guitarist Dave Davies that he made amid the studio sessions for Arthur. According to Rolling Stone, the box set will also contain a book with essays about The Kinks, new interviews with members of the group, photos from the time period and the script for a proposed Arthur play.

The album was super innovative at the time with the group’s decision to tell a story across its tracks. Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) is about a British carpet-layer, who moves to Australia after World War II.

Is there a tour in The Kinks future? It remains to be seen.

After years of speculations, the surviving members of The Kinks decided to finally put aside their differences in 2018 and collaborate on new projects. As it turns out, they have been working hard since then and might soon have new songs to offer to their fans.

The band’s singer and guitarist Ray Davies said back in 2018 that he and his brother Dave Davies (lead guitar), alongside original drummer Mick Avory, are working on a “new Kinks record.”  Rolling Stone magazine reached out to Dave Davies for follow-up info this week and received some encouraging news.

According to Davies, the group was busy working on a reissue of their iconic 1969’s concept album Arthur, which will be out in October.

“That’s virtually done,” – said Davies. “It’s a really, really interesting package that’s going to have other songs from that time period like [my solo song] “Hold My Hand.”

During the work on Arthur, the band was going through their archives and discovered numerous unreleased songs that have big potential.

“This has really been going on for a couple of years,” – he added, “We keep going backwards and listening to a lot of old stuff. Some of that is very good, and some of it needs a bit of work.”

The Kinks have been finishing these old songs lately and re-recording them, while also working on brand new tracks.

“The songs are really just in demo form now,”  – Dave explains. “But good demos. Ray is still dissecting various other material we might use. The intention is to get the workout, but it’s not a done deal.”

Rolling Stone was also curious about a potential tour of The Kinks surviving members, but Dave Davies didn’t have much to say about that.

“Interesting question,” – he said. “I really don’t know. I think it’s possible. It’s not out of the question. But at this stage, it’s far too early to say. It would be fun though, wouldn’t it?”

Although The Kinks are still far away from the reunion, the fans of this British rock band still got some new music recently. A previously unreleased song from 1968, titled “Time Song,” was unveiled as part of the promotion for band’s upcoming 50th-anniversary edition of their sixth studio album, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society.

This edition will be available on October 26th, and you can check out the song below.

“Time Song” will be available both digitally and as a limited edition seven-inch vinyl. Although the track wasn’t included on any previous album, The Kinks did play it live on one occasion. It was in January 1973 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London.

“When we played a concert at Drury Lane in ’73 to ‘celebrate’ us about to join what was called the Common Market, I decided to use the song as a warning that time was running out for the old British Empire,” explained frontman Ray Davies in a statement. “This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track its a rough mix which still has to be finessed.”

The 50th-anniversary edition of The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society will be available as standard 2-CD version as well as a deluxe box set. According to the official description, the set will contain numerous exciting things for The Kinks’ fans including: “remastered original album, B-sides, live cuts, other unreleased tracks and alternate versions, mixes and backing tracks; three seven-inch singles, a gatefold double-LP, various memorabilia and a 52-page hardback photo book featuring sleeve notes, interviews, photography and essays from the Who’s Pete Townshend and journalist Kate Mossman.”
