Metallica’s legendary self-titled studio effort from 1991, commonly known as The Black Album, celebrates its 30th birthday this year. As part of efforts to mark this special anniversary, the band recently decided to share a rough mix of the album’s second single, “The Unforgiven.”

According to the info included, the rough mix was completed on May 14th, 1991, at One on One Recording studio in Los Angeles. Compared to The Black Album version, it seems to have fewer effects, especially guitar-wise, and frontman James Hetfield’s vocals sound cleaner and softer. Hear it below.

“The Unforgiven” rough mix will be included in the special reissue of The Black Album. It comes on September 10th and will contain remastered original songs and loads of other goodies like alternate mixes and demo versions.

The reissue will be followed by The Metallica Blacklist cover album, which features more than 50 artists delivering their renditions of The Black Album songs in all sorts of different styles. Seven “The Unforgiven” covers will be included on the album, with three of them already being made available on streaming platforms.

You can check out the covers of “The Unforgiven” by Latin pop duo Ha*Ash, Indian music artists Vishal Dadlani, DIVINE, Shor Police, and indie rockers Diet Cig below.

Another copy of Prince’s ultra rare record The Black Album has surfaced.

The vinyl record is one of the most sought-after collectible pressings of all time. Approximately 500,000 copies were made by Warner Bros. in 1987, but they were ordered to be destroyed after Prince branded the record as “evil” and refused its release. The label did their best to destroy ever copy, but in the past 30 years three copies of the original pressing have surfaced.

“It is easily one of the rarest records in the world,” said Jeff Gold, a rarities expert.

Today, however, another copy of the rare album was found in Canada by a former employee of the Columbia Records Canadian pressing plant.

“In 1987, he was working at Columbia Records Canadian pressing plant in Canada,” explained Gold.

“When The Black Album was pulled and the copies had been made marked for destruction, he kept one copy for himself. He never realized its rarity or value until reading about the discovery of the U.S. copies in Rolling Stone and contacted me.”

With Gold’s help, the owner listed the unsealed, played record on Discogs yesterday for $27,500. The previous editions sold for over $10,000 more but were in mint condition.

The year was 1987, and Prince was about to release his sixteenth studio album. The album didn’t have an official name, but Prince referred to it as The Black Album. The promo material for the album contained just a black sleeve and the song listing. Then, one week before the official release of the album, Prince had a spiritual epiphany, and became convinced that the album was “evil”. He immediately abandoned the entire project and asked Warner Bros. to withdraw and destroy all 500,000 copies. The label obliged and hunted down the copies, while even asking executives to return their advanced copies.

Around 100 European promotional copies remained in circulation, but the U.S. copies were almost impossible to find. Although The Black Album was eventually released on CDs and cassettes in 1994, the original 1987 U.S. vinyl edition became a holy grail for the record collectors. Fast forward to 2017, and three copies surfaced in the last 30 years, all of which were sold for huge amounts of money.

Then, in December, Warner executive named Jeff Gold receives a mail in which a former colleague asks around about the price for the original 1987 U.S. vinyl edition of The Black Album. It turns out that he discovered five sealed and pristine copies of the album among his record collection and would like to sell three of them. Two are already sold while one is currently available for purchase on Recordmecca, and can be bought for $15,000. The seller will keep one for himself while the fifth one will most likely be offered at an auction in the future.

If you want something owned by less than 10 people in the world and have extra money sitting around then this one is a must buy. You can wait for Prince’s unreleased album Camille to surface again, but the chances are slim for that to happen anytime soon.
