]]>This year’s host David Tennant took a moment to reflect on the viral fame that “Murder on the Dancefloor” experienced after being featured in Saltburn. The film’s Rosamund Pike assisted him as he welcomed Ellis-Bextor on stage, saying they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring the very special performance of this viral hit to the BAFTAs.
Ellis-Bextor hit the stage with her signature glittery green eyeshadow, paying homage to the original “Murder on the Dancefloor” music video from 2001. She was joined by a group of backup dancers, who helped her make the performance even more memorable.
“Murder on the Dancefloor” experienced a true renaissance after being featured in Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy Saltburn, which was in the running for five BAFTA Film Awards. The success of this film helped it return to the UK Singles Chart at No. 2 and become Ellis-Bextor’s first song to ever chart on the US Billboard Hot 100.

]]>“Murder on the Dancefloor” has been embraced by the fans of Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn after being featured in the film’s final scene. Saltburn is coming into this year’s BAFTAs with five nominations, and the mastermind behind this award show decided to invite Ellis-Bextor to hit the iconic Royal Festival Hall stage in London on February 18.
“Murder on the Dancefloor” catapulted Ellis-Bextor back to stardom after being featured in Saltburn. It became her first song to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, re-peaked at No. 2 in the UK, and she even decided to re-release it on vinyl following its newfound success.
Ellis-Bextor said it feels amazing to see people around the world discover this song, over two decades after its initial release in 2001.
“I feel like it’s kind of starting to turn into something where it might mean I go places I haven’t been for a while… Mainly, I think it’s just a really good example of what I’ve always loved about what I do, which is that you have to be open to the unexpected,” she told Forbes.

]]>Originally released as a single from Ellis-Bextor’s 2001 album Read My Lips, “Murder on the Dancefloor” is going stronger than ever over two decades after its originally peaked at No. 2. The song owes its resurgence to Emerald Fennell’s latest film Saltburn, which prominently featured this catchy disco hit in one of its most memorable scenes.
Ellis-Bextor discussed the song’s epic comeback with the Official Charts, and thanked all the fans, both new and old, for streaming the song and helping it reach new heights.
“One thing I’ve always loved about my work is its ability to surprise me. Murder on the Dancefloor is a song I’ve been singing for 20 years, and I’m on really good terms with it. I love singing it, I love performing it and what’s happening at the moment is kind of magical, actually,” said Ellis-Bextor.
In addition to re-peaking at No. 2 in the UK, “Murder on the Dancefloor” became her first song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, after hitting No. 98 just last week.

]]>Ellis-Bextor discussed hearing her iconic hit in a recent interview with People and said she was happy to let Fennell use it, especially since the director didn’t really have a plan B.
“She just felt like it tied everything together in terms of the tone of the film and the juxtaposition of the sort of sweetness of the pop song, but also a little sting in the tail with the lyrics as well… I’ve been singing ‘Murder’ for over 20 years and it’s so nice that it still has the power to surprise me,” said Ellis-Bextor.
“Murder on the Dancefloor” made it to the final scene of Fennell’s black comedy, which sees Barry Keoghan dancing nude to its bit after doing whatever it takes to assume the ownership of the lavish Saltburn estate. Ellis-Bextor got to read the synopsis for this scene, but still “wasn’t quite prepared for the visual.”
Despite being taken aback by the final product, the singer said she “absolutely loved” Saltburn and described it as a “clever, funny, smart film.” She added that she “had a giggle” with Keoghan about his scene and said he’ll never be able to hear “Murder on the Dancefloor” the same way again.
