Billy Corgan has been keeping himself quite busy recently, and it seems like he doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon. In a recent interview with 102.9 The Buzz, Corgan shared that he is currently working on a new Smashing Pumpkins album.

Smashing Pumpkins reunited in their founding lineup back in 2018, releasing a new album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. and embarking on a world tour. It appears that Corgan, who in the meantime released solo album Cotillions, immediately got to work on new music after the tour wrapped up.

“It’s currently 21 songs,” Corgan said. “I’ve been working on it for over a year. It’s pretty different – in a good way, I think. Everybody that’s heard it likes it a lot, so that’s a good sign.”

Corgan also revealed that he and the band will also do “some touring” in 2020.

“We’re gonna do some touring. We’re playing a big festival in Atlanta, I think in April or May: Shaky Knees. I’m not sure we’re playing Nashville this year. Actually, I think we might. I might be giving a secret away. We might be doing a little ‘surprisey’ gig soon,” he added.

Smashing Pumpkins will probably look to redeem themselves on the new record, as their 2018’s release wasn’t as successful as they hoped. The record received generally positive reviews from the critics but ended up being a commercial failure. It only reached No.54 on US Billboard 200, marking the band’s worst chart performance since their debut record Gish.

It seems like former Smashing Pumpkins’ bassist D’arcy Wretzky is getting back to music after not playing for almost 20 years. Although Wretzky won’t take part in the reunion of the band’s classic lineup, she returned to the studio recently and has been jamming with doom metal band Grave Next Door.

In a recent interview with Alternative Nation, members of Grave Next Door confirmed that Wretzky has been playing with them for a while and joined them in the studio several times.

“She’s playing on a few of our studio tracks but also thinking about becoming a full time member,” – said the band.

“She’s thinking about joining, but she’s busy with her farm and the animals so that’s her first priority.” – they added while noting that they are scheduled to enter the studio again in May.

D’arcy Wretzky was one of the founding members of Smashing Pumpkins and played on the band’s first five studio albums. She decided to leave the band in 1999 in order to pursue an acting career but ended up disappearing from the spotlight altogether.

When it was made public that she won’t be part of the Smashing Pumpkins recent reunion, Wretzky said that she was offered a contract from frontman Billy Corgan to rejoin the band, but the offer was quickly withdrawn. Corgan on the other side claimed that she refused to be a part of the reunion.

Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan recently had a chat with Metallica drummer’s Lars Ulrich on his Beats 1 radio show, It’s Electric, and offered an update about the band’s upcoming album.

According to Corgan, the band already finished recording eight tracks for the album on which they worked with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Although this will be the first album to feature the Smashing Pumpkins’ classic line-up (or most of it) since 2000’s Machina, the process of making songs didn’t change.

“In this case, it came really quickly,” Corgan said to Ulrichs. “We did 16 demos in three weeks, and then I played Rick what I thought were the eight best songs, hoping he would pick one, and he picked all eight… We were standing there like, our eyes are blinking. We thought we were just going to do a single.”

In February 2018, Smashing Pumpkins announced that founding members – guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin – rejoined the band and will embark on a Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour in July 2018. Still, the band’s original line-up wasn’t brought back together in full, since bassist D’arcy Wretzky won’t be part of the reunion. Jack Bates, the son of New Order’s Peter Hook, will play bass on the tour.

Speaking with Ulrich, Billy Corgan revealed that he hasn’t been in the same room as Wretzky for 19 years, and although he tried to repair his relationship with her, it didn’t work.

“I spent two years before all that repairing my relationship, and every time I tried to get into a room with her — so, I still haven’t been in a room with her in 19 years,” he explained. “It was a telephone thing and you’re trying to say, ‘This can happen, this can happen, what do you think?’ Always very pleasant, great, awesome, and only when it became obvious that it wasn’t the way she wanted it to be, it turned into this other thing that was reminiscent of the past.”

D’arcy Wretzky previously stated that she was offered to be a part of the tour briefly, but that Corgan decided to pull the offer and hired Bates before she had the time to respond.

Alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins reverted to its original line-up (missing bassist D’arcy Wretzky) and will embark on a tour across the U.S. titled Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour, which will see the band playing material from their first five studio albums. As it turns out, the audience might be able to hear some new songs as well.

Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan revealed on his official Instagram account that the band will present two new EPs, with each containing four tracks. According to Corgan, the majority of the work on the songs has been finished with “background vocals and last minute touches left” to be taken care of. The first song should be presented in May. Smashing Pumpkins formed in 1988, with a line-up consisting of Billy Corgan (lead vocals and guitar), James Iha (guitar), Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), and D’arcy Wretzky (bass guitar). After six studio albums together, the band decided to disband in 2000. After six years, Billy Corgan decided to reform the band with Chamberlin, while Iha and Wretzky denied the opportunity. In 2009, Jimmy Chamberlin leaves the band, with Corgan remaining as the only founding member.

The first reports about the original line-up reunion came in August 2016, when Billy Corgan revealed that he has reached out to others to see if they were interested to participate in the reunion. Then on February 15, 2018, it was officially announced that James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin are returning to the band’s line-up and that Smashing Pumpkins will embark on a tour.

There are conflicting reports about the reasons why D’arcy Wretzky won’t join in. According to Corgan, she was invited but rejected the offer. Wretzky, on the other hand, says that Corgan offered her a contract but swiftly pulled back the offer, since he already hired a new bassist.
