Smashing Pumpkins announced on social media that the band started recording sessions for their next studio album. According to the post on Instagram, the album will have 33 songs and will serve as a sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina.

The group also revealed that they had completed lyrics and the music for all 33 tracks.

The album was confirmed back in late 2020 when frontman Billy Corgan described the projects as “rock opera.”

“We feel like in many ways this completes the circle on everything we started and weren’t able to finish at that time, so we’re very excited about [it],” he said in a YouTube video at the time.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was released as a double LP and served as Smashing Pumpkins’ third studio effort. The release debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at no. 1 while also being receiving critical acclaim from the critics. It got the group seven nominations at the 39th Grammys and a Grammy Award in Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal category for “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”

Machina, on the other hand, wasn’t as successful and was met with just favorable reviews and modest commercial success. Despite this, the album, which marked the return of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin to the group, has somewhat of a cult status among the Smashing Pumpkins fans.

Billy Corgan has been keeping himself quite busy recently, and it seems like he doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon. In a recent interview with 102.9 The Buzz, Corgan shared that he is currently working on a new Smashing Pumpkins album.

Smashing Pumpkins reunited in their founding lineup back in 2018, releasing a new album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. and embarking on a world tour. It appears that Corgan, who in the meantime released solo album Cotillions, immediately got to work on new music after the tour wrapped up.

“It’s currently 21 songs,” Corgan said. “I’ve been working on it for over a year. It’s pretty different – in a good way, I think. Everybody that’s heard it likes it a lot, so that’s a good sign.”

Corgan also revealed that he and the band will also do “some touring” in 2020.

“We’re gonna do some touring. We’re playing a big festival in Atlanta, I think in April or May: Shaky Knees. I’m not sure we’re playing Nashville this year. Actually, I think we might. I might be giving a secret away. We might be doing a little ‘surprisey’ gig soon,” he added.

Smashing Pumpkins will probably look to redeem themselves on the new record, as their 2018’s release wasn’t as successful as they hoped. The record received generally positive reviews from the critics but ended up being a commercial failure. It only reached No.54 on US Billboard 200, marking the band’s worst chart performance since their debut record Gish.

Everyone loves a soppy reunion story and this one is about a rock star and his beloved guitar.

Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins lost his signature Fender Stratocaster after playing a show at Detroit’s Saint Andrew’s Hall in 1992. He has described the guitar as a signature part of his sound and admitted that he “heavily identified with the guitar.”

Over the years, plenty of false rumors concerning the guitar’s whereabouts have circulated. Now, 27 years later, it looks like Corgan has been reunited with his beloved ex.

“Somebody sent me a picture a couple of weeks ago of another one of my guitars, and I wrote the guy back and said, ‘How did you get my guitar?’” the Smashing Pumpkin told the Rolling Stone.

“And he wrote back, ‘Oh, it’s a recreation.’ He’d literally gotten the same stickers, worn them down in the same way and scraped the paint so it looked worn. You could have fooled me.”

Corgan checked out the guitar in person and sure enough, it was the same guitar he lost 27 years ago.

“It instantly changed the way the band sounded and the way I played,” Corgan said of the guitar. “When it was stolen, it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, gee, my guitar just got stolen.’ It was the guitar that affected the way I played and I was heavily identified with the guitar.”

Now the two have been reunited at last. Who doesn’t love a happy ending?

Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan recently had a chat with Metallica drummer’s Lars Ulrich on his Beats 1 radio show, It’s Electric, and offered an update about the band’s upcoming album.

According to Corgan, the band already finished recording eight tracks for the album on which they worked with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Although this will be the first album to feature the Smashing Pumpkins’ classic line-up (or most of it) since 2000’s Machina, the process of making songs didn’t change.

“In this case, it came really quickly,” Corgan said to Ulrichs. “We did 16 demos in three weeks, and then I played Rick what I thought were the eight best songs, hoping he would pick one, and he picked all eight… We were standing there like, our eyes are blinking. We thought we were just going to do a single.”

In February 2018, Smashing Pumpkins announced that founding members – guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin – rejoined the band and will embark on a Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour in July 2018. Still, the band’s original line-up wasn’t brought back together in full, since bassist D’arcy Wretzky won’t be part of the reunion. Jack Bates, the son of New Order’s Peter Hook, will play bass on the tour.

Speaking with Ulrich, Billy Corgan revealed that he hasn’t been in the same room as Wretzky for 19 years, and although he tried to repair his relationship with her, it didn’t work.

“I spent two years before all that repairing my relationship, and every time I tried to get into a room with her — so, I still haven’t been in a room with her in 19 years,” he explained. “It was a telephone thing and you’re trying to say, ‘This can happen, this can happen, what do you think?’ Always very pleasant, great, awesome, and only when it became obvious that it wasn’t the way she wanted it to be, it turned into this other thing that was reminiscent of the past.”

D’arcy Wretzky previously stated that she was offered to be a part of the tour briefly, but that Corgan decided to pull the offer and hired Bates before she had the time to respond.
