Sleater-Kinney has openly discussed how they feel about drummer Janet Weiss leaving the band.

Weiss recently announced that after 24 years, she felt it was time to leave Sleater-Kinney. She left right before the release of the band’s new album, The Center Won’t Hold, and her departure sparked up controversy. The remaining members of the band have kept quiet about their feelings regarding Weiss’ unexpected departure, until now.

Speaking to The Guardian, Corin Tucker shared that she supported the drummer’s decision to leave the band. After explaining that Weiss was not well, she said: “We want Janet to be happy and healthy. If someone’s not happy doing that job, it wouldn’t be good for any of us.”

Carrie Brownstein also shared that one of the influences of the new album has been Rihanna.

“I came up with the melody for ‘Romance’ after a day of listening to Rihanna and Beyoncé, and then filtering it through my messed up post-punk filter,” Brownstein told Rolling Stone via The Guardian.

The Center Won’t Hold is out August 16.

Sleater-Kinney’s drummer, Janet Weiss, has announced that she will be leaving the band after 24 years.

Sleater-Kinney is one of the OG “girl power” rock bands of the ’90s. They have a loyal following and continue to make music today. In fact, it is less than one month before the band’s upcoming album The Center Won’t Hold is released. This makes it all the more surprising that Weiss has chosen now to leave the band.

Sharing the news on Twitter, Weiss said in a statement: “After intense deliberation and with heavy sadness, I have decided to leave Sleater-Kinney. The band is heading in a new direction and it is time for me to move on. I will never forget the heights we reached or the magnificent times Corin, Carrie and I shared.

“We were a force of nature. To the dearest SK fans – you’re the raddest fans in the universe and I love you. Experiencing the music together has been the honor of a lifetime. Thank you for sustaining me the past 24 years and for proving without a doubt that love and connection are what saves us.”

As far as we are aware, the band’s 2020 tour will go ahead as planned and The Center Won’t Hold is still scheduled for an August release.

Punk started in the 70s and took the music world by storm. It’s a genre not defined by complex rhythms and shredding guitar solos – it’s all about the attitude. Here are ten of the best classic punk albums of all time.

The Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks

It’s difficult to think “punk” without responding with “The Sex Pistols.” The UK’s response to the Ramones were the epitome of punk stands for and Never Mind the Bollocks is iconic.

Black Flag – Damaged

Branded at the time as an “an anti-parent record,” Damaged is about as angry and anti-everything as a record can get.

Sleater Kinney – Dig Me Out

Punk’s final gasp in the late ’90s. These girls brought punk to the indie-rock scene.

Husker Du – Zen Arcade

What happens when punk meets the art form of the concept album? Zen Arcade.

The Dead Kennedys – Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables

The Dead Kennedys’ debut album is more musically technical than The Sex Pistols, who Jello Biafra satirizes in a couple of tracks.

The Clash – The Clash

A gnarly, edgy album that sounds like the world is about to get turned upside down.

Iggy & The Stooges – Raw Power

Iconic not just for the album cover.

X-Ray Spex – Germ Free Adolescence

Poly Styrene proved that punk wasn’t just for boys. Her angry, feminist rants over catchy and creative music is a treat.

Ramones – Ramones

“Blitzkrieg Bop” birthed a new era and the Ramones’ debut album gave us all of the attitude with none of the substance.

The Clash – London Calling

The Clash’s third album is a punk album which borrows from a range of styles including reggae, jazz, pop and ska. It manages to be musically adventurous while maintaining the bite that defines The Clash’s sound.
