Sometimes, it’s OK not to just “get on with it” and have that much-needed wallow. When it comes to self-indulgent cries, The Smiths and Coldplay might do the trick, but if you are after something a little more powerful, these 10 songs are emotional in the most human and tender way.

Into My Arms (Nick Cave)

We were reminded of this song after Ricky Gervais used it during a touching scene in After Life. It had us tearing up then and it has us tearing up now.

Nutshell (Alice In Chains)

The live version of this track is difficult to listen to because you can hear the relentless pain in his voice as he struggles to get through the song during one of his last performances.

Drugs Don’t Work (The Verve)

The content of the song is quite heavy and the lyrics are incredibly moving.

Tears In Heaven (Eric Clapton)

Eric Clapton wrote this song for his son after he fell out the window. It is heartbreakingly beautiful and raw.

Hurt (Johnny Cash)

Although the Nine Inch Nails original is great too, Johnny Cash’s cover is so poignant that most people believe he wrote it.

How To Disappear Completely  (Radiohead)

Radiohead have several tearjerkers but this song encapsulates the feeling of total detachment from oneself and the world.

The Raven That Refused To Sing  (Steve Wilson)

I should probably add a warning here that if you haven’t watched this video before, it will likely make you cry.

Blue (Joni Mitchel)

Joni Mitchel is the OG anti-depressant.

The Boxer (Simon and Garfunkel)

Simon and Garfunkel have a habit of sounding like they are singing cheerfully when the content of the song is actually very sad.

Stay Positive (The Streets)

“Stay Positive” contains some of the most depressing and powerful lyrics of their entire catalog.

Mother (Pink Floyd)

“Mother” is deeply personal and is one of Pink Floyd’s lesser praised but most powerful songs.
