Iconic British rockers New Order have ended their five-year studio break by releasing a single “Be a Rebel.” The track is a taste of their upcoming new album and represents the band’s first new music since 2015’s full-length effort Music Complete.

“Be a Rebel” was originally supposed to be an introduction into the band’s tour across North America in the fall, but the COVID-19 pandemic spoiled their plans. New Order is now scheduled to tour in 2021 but they didn’t want their fans to wait for that long, so the group shared the song ahead of time.

As we learned to expect from New Order, “Be a Rebel” is filled with haunting synths and melancholic moments. However, the band decided to add some flavor to their classic sound here and injected the tune with effective dance elements.

“In tough times, we wanted to reach out with a new song,” said frontman Bernard Sumner in a press release. “We can’t play live for a while, but music is still something we can all share together. We hope you enjoy it…until we meet again.”

New Order was previously scheduled to kick off their joint tour with Pet Shop Boys, titled the Unity Tour, earlier this month. The trip was rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic and moved to the fall of next year.

In the meantime, the group is preparing a reissue of their second studio album Power, Corruption and Lies. The release will contain a remastered original record alongside a handful of bonus content, including unreleased writing sessions and demos.

Legendary British rockers New Order will soon treat their fans with a new live record. The band announced that the album, titled ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes.., is scheduled for release on July 12th.

The album contains material recorded on New Order’s show at 2017 Manchester International Festival, where they performed with English conceptual artist Liam Gillick and a 12-piece synthesizer orchestra from Royal Northern College Of Music.

The show saw the group performing both fan favorites and rarities that haven’t been played in decades. Among those songs were Joy Division’s classic “Disorder,” which the band played for the first time as New Order; “Ultraviolence,” which was last played in 1984, and “Shellshock,” the song that hasn’t seen live treatment since 1987.

∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes.. will be released on digital platforms, as a double CD and also as a triple vinyl. The vinyl edition will come with red, green and blue LPs and a 24-page booklet.

As part of the announcement for the album, the band shared the live recording of the song “Sub-Culture,” which was part of the band’s 1985’s album Low-Life. Before the show in Manchester, the track was last performed live in 1989. Hear it below.

New Order recently presented rare archival footage which features the band playing their debut single “Ceremony.” The footage was recorded on 6th February 1981 at Manchester’s CoManCHE Student Union during a live performance of the British rockers.

“Ceremony” was one of the last songs that was composed by Joy Division, with the band’s frontman Ian Curtis writing the lyrics. There are three versions of Joy Division’s recording of the song known to be in existence including the one from the band’s final concert.

Following Curtis’ suicide, surviving members of Joy Division – Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner – formed New Order and took “Ceremony” to be their first single under the new name. The interesting thing about the track is that the band didn’t enlist it onto their debut album Movement.

You can check out the rare video of New Order performing “Ceremony” at CoManCHE Student Union below.

The release of this video serves as a part of the promotion ahead of the reissue of their seminal record Movement, which is scheduled for release on April 5th, 2019. The album will be reissued on vinyl and CD while containing lots of previously unreleased content like demos, live performances, and outtakes.

Stephen Morris, the drummer of New Order will be publishing his autobiography May 2019.

Morris will be the third member of the band to release his own book. It will be published by Constable and is titled Record Play Pause. The memoir follows Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner’s books so it will be interesting to compare how the three remember the events of the band.

The book’s press release states: “Stephen’s book won’t be that typical music autobiography, which tends to be high on mischief and low on the music. Part memoir, part oral history, it will be a hybrid memoir in Stephen’s wry and witty voice.

“Stephen will weave a dual narrative of growing up in the North West during the 1970s with how the music actually works. It will also explore what it is to be part of a mythologized band and the idea of what you do becoming who you are.”

You can pre-order Record Play Pause here.
