This year’s Eurovision Song Contest took us to Malmö, Sweden, and it was pretty tense until the very last minute. Switzerland’s contestant Nemo was eventually crowned as the winner with their song “The Code”, becoming the first non-binary person to win Eurovision.

Nemo, who uses they/them pronouns and identifies as s non-binary, entered the competition as one of the favorites but was never considered a front-runner. That changed during the grand final, when the jury gave them a whopping 365 points, propelling Nemo to the No. 1 spot with 22 sets of the maximum 12 points.

The mood shifted when the public votes were announced, with several countries switching up at the top position. It eventually came down to Nemo’s “The Code” and the bookies’ favorite “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” by Baby Lasagna from Croatia, which won the public vote but still ended up second.

Nemo finished first with a total of 591 points, including 365 points from the juries and 226 points from the televote. Their victory is quite historic and it marks Switzerland’s first win since Celine Dion’s “Ne partez pas sans moi” in 1988. Nemo also made history as the first person who identifies as non-binary to be crowned as Eurovision winner.
