Labels aren’t cruising around looking for unknowns to become stars anymore. They know how MySpace works, they can find anyone at any time.

This isn’t good news — it means the “big break” is a thing of the past and the only thing that really convinces labels to take on an act is proven demand.

It’s easy to worm your way onto a popular playlist and see your Spotify listens hit the millions. Sadly, nobody cares.

Record companies know how this works. If you want the labels to listen to you then you have to be able to put bums on seats during live shows. Those people are fans, not casual listeners.

You’d be amazed to find out how many people are making a fortune as musicians who barely maintain their own Facebook presence.

TV, film, freelance recording artists, house concert artists, etc. all get paid well and aren’t online. Making it big doesn’t require the Internet.

When you know how the music business works, you can start to make it work for you. Good luck Millennial artists, we can’t wait to hear you.

Bros sang, “When will I be famous?” And the answer was, “very briefly in the 1990s before you sink beneath the waves forever.”

They might have done better had they read our 3 tips for aspiring musicians who want to top the charts and keep topping the charts for a long time to come.

Know Your Audience

Commercial music is a product and it’s important to realize that successful products have an audience of users prepared to pay for that product.

To get to know your audience – do some market research. Find out where they live, how old they are, how many of them there are, how they get their music, etc. Then you can start to tailor your marketing to their needs.

Be Diverse In Your Approach: It’s A Marathon Not A Sprint

Most people quit music before they make their mark. The trick, for those who want a career, is to do other music-related things and get paid for those as well. E.g. production work, DJ, music lessons, etc. This will not just keep you in the game but also help you find new influences.

Build A Brand, Not Just A Band

People buy from people they like. So, make it easy for your fans to like you and not just your music. Develop a fan club, offer insights into band members, etc. and build a brand and not just a band.

We can’t promise you fame and fortune but if you do get there, following these tips will help you last longer than Bros.
