While some songs are written specifically for movies, others are utilized in a film so well that you would think that they were written especially for certain features. Here are 7 songs we will forever associate with the movies that attracted a whole new audience of listeners.

Donnie Darko: Killing Moon (Echo & The Bunnymen)

The intro scene to Donnie Darko features “Killing Moon” by the post-rock band, Echo & The Bunnymen. It will forever be associated with the cult classic, which has an all-round fantastic soundtrack.

Reservoir Dogs: Stuck In The Middle With You (Steelers Wheels)

“Stuck In The Middle With You” is a pretty upbeat song which was totally ruined by the iconic torture scene in Reservoir Dogs. It made the whole ordeal even more unnerving.

Pulp fiction: Rumble (Link Ray)

“Rumble” is the iconic rockabilly song which we will forever associate with a young John Travolta and Uma Thurming fighting sexual tension at a rockabilly bar.

Us: I Got 5 On It (Luniz)

The already eerie rap song was made all the more chilling when John Peele made it the theme for his social thriller, Us.

Fight Club: Where Is My Mind (Pixies)

The final scene of Fight Club got a whole new generation of fans listening to Pixies. The song has been played in many other films but for us, it will always be associated with Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.

Trainspotting: Lust for Life (Iggy Pop)

“Lust for Life” is the anthem which makes the depressing and grueling film bearable. It adds a shimmer of hope for Mark Renton and us watching.

Moulin Rouge: Your Song (Elton John)

As much as we rated Taron Egerton’s performance in Rocketman, Ewan McGregor’s charming rendition in Moulin Rouge is forever burned in our memory.

Billie Eilish is one of the most promising young artists in the world right now and her music is a gift that keeps on giving. The singer just dropped her first single of 2019 – somber tune “When I Was Older” inspired by the Golden Globe-winning movie Roma.

The critically acclaimed drama was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and it was loosely based on his own upbringing in Mexico City during the ‘70s. Roma received several prestigious awards, including two Golden Globes, and experts are predicting it will be competing at the Oscars, as well.

This film inspired Billie Eilish to write one of the most haunting tracks of her career, along with her older brother Finneas O’Connell. She was one of the artists hand-picked by Cuarón to record a song for the upcoming album Music Inspired By Roma.

“When we were composing the song, we wanted to write from within the narrative of the movie and the scenes that struck us the most from it. Nothing about this song would exist without the film, which is exactly what we love about it,” read a joint statement released by Eilish and O’Connell.

There are some songs which just fit perfectly into a movie. The trouble is, some songs fit so well that they end up featuring in one title too many. Here are five songs which are overplayed in film.

Bad To the Bone (George Thorogood and the Destroyers)

‘Bad To The Bone’ is a raunchy, badass track which lets you know that the character in question does not play by the rules.

Features in: Hawaii Five-O, Megamind, The Muppets, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Firehouse Dog, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Joe Dirt.

Born To Be Wild (Steppenwolf)

‘Born To Be Wild’ is another track for motorcyclists and rebels. If the characters are about to be liberated and the film has a ’60s feel, we’d put our money on this song being played.

Features in:  One Crazy Summer, Las Vegas, Six Feet Under, The Wonder Years, Problem Child, Wild America, Easy Rider  and Borat.. to name a few.

White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)

If the characters are about to get wavy, the producers will let you know by playing White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplaine.

Features in: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Holiday, Circuit, Love and Music, Go Ask Alice, Coming Home and Singularity Is Near.

Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

We get it, you’re taking the movie to the South. You don’t always need to play this song for us to figure that out.

Features in: The Mask, Forrest Gump, The Girl Next Door, The Simpsons, Despicale Me and understandably, Sweet Home Alabama.

Hallelujah (Lenoard Cohen)

When things get tough and the protagonist feels all is lost, you can trust Leonard Cohen’s iconic track to come on.

Features in: The West Wing, Without a Trace, Feast of Love, Lord of War, Crossing Jordan and of course, Shrek.
