A rare cover of Metallica’s classic track “Enter Sandman”, recorded by legendary English rockers Motörhead, has finally made its way to the streaming platforms. Motörhead’s rendition of The Black Album track was previously only available as a physical copy and fan-made online rips.

Motörhead recorded “Enter Sandman”  as part of the compilation for the 1998 ECW Wrestling event. The cover was met with positive reactions from fans and critics and even received a nomination at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in the Best Metal Performance category. However, various legal disputes prevented the track from making its official digital release debut until now.

Motörhead’s “Enter Sandman” cover also received an animated music video directed by Mulberry Creative. The video features the band’s iconic Warpig mascot saving a child from an evil sandman.

“This is Motörhead’s little heard cover of Metallica’s huge global hit, ‘Enter Sandman’ – a loving homage to arguably the most recognizable heavy metal song of all time,” it says in the release.

The digital release of the “Enter Sandman” cover aligns with Motörhead Day, which is celebrated annually on May 8. As part of the festivities, the band is also releasing a limited-edition 7″ vinyl of the track and accompanying merchandise, which can be purchased on the band’s official website.

Motörhead may have disbanded three years ago after the death of its main driving force Lemmy, but guitarist Phil Campbell hasn’t stopped performing. In fact, he is going to put forward his first-ever solo album soon, the aptly-named Old Lions Still Roar.

Campbell has gathered an impressive pack of old lions to collaborate with for the album, including Alice Cooper, Mick Mars (Mötley Crüe), guitar legend Joe Satriani, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest).

“I couldn’t believe the incredible players that spent some time on the record for me,” Campbell said to Andrew McKaysmith on his podcast, Scars and Guitars. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world in that respect. Mega talent all the way through it, helping me out when I needed help. I’ve got no complaints whatsoever.”

On the making of the album, Campbell said: “I wouldn’t say [it was] 20 years in the making, but 20 years I’ve been yearning to do a solo album. Since Motörhead, sadly, finished, I’ve had more time to think about [it] and to knuckle down and everything. I probably started the first recording of it about two and a half, three years ago.”

The songs we’ve heard from the upcoming release all sound great and distinctly different from the established Motörhead formula. “I just didn’t want to do an album sounding like Motörhead,” Campbell explained. “I’ve done 20-odd albums like that.”

The first single of Lynda Kay’s new double album, Black & Gold, was just released, and it’s a never-before duet with non-other than the man and the legend, Lemmy of Motörhead.

“Big news!” Twitted Kay, “The first single on my new double album Black & Gold is […] the long-lost duet I wrote and recorded with my dear friend Lemmy of Motörhead called ‘The Mask’. I’m so proud of this song, hope you enjoy it too.”

The story of how “The Mask” came to be released more than three years after Lemmy’s death is quite amazing. Lemmy had started work on the song 30 years ago, back in 1979, but it was only finished in 2009, two decades later. It took another 10 years for it to be released, and was in fact thought to have been lost for most of that period.

Kay explained how all of this happened in an interview she gave to Gretsh, a guitar company, last year: “The way the duet came together was one night I stopped by The Rainbow on Sunset Blvd. to say hi to Lemmy after I’d just been recording at Billy Bob Thornton’s recording studio. When he asked ‘Where you been Lyn?’ and I told him I was at Billy Bob’s recording a duet, he said, ‘Well, when are we going to do a duet together?’ I said, ‘Tonight?’ then we laughed and talked about recording a song he’d started in the ’70s called ‘The Mask’. We finished writing the song, went into the studio, and recorded it together.”

While the song, a country duet, is very different from the metal music Lemmy is most famous for, it carries his signature, unmistakable charm. Give it a listen below:

Motörhead may have disbanded three years ago after the death of its main driving force Lemmy, but guitarist Phil Campbell hasn’t stopped performing. In fact, he is going to put forward his first-ever solo album soon, the aptly-named Old Lions Still Roar.
